The wait for the complete IPL 2026 schedule is nearing its end as the tournament approaches its opening fixture.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India is expected to finalise and release the remaining fixtures for the 19th season within the next few days. According to Cricbuzz, franchises have been informed that the board requires an additional three to four days to complete the scheduling process.
Why the IPL 2026 schedule has been delayed
The staggered rollout of fixtures has been driven primarily by logistical challenges linked to state elections. Key regions such as Assam, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu required significant security deployment, forcing the BCCI to delay finalising venue allocations and match timings.
With the Election Commission of India having now confirmed polling dates, the board has been able to move forward with planning the remaining matches, clearing a major bottleneck in the process.
First phase announced, majority of matches pending
The BCCI had earlier released only a partial schedule covering the opening segment of the tournament. The first phase includes 20 matches running until April 12, leaving 54 fixtures yet to be announced.
The season is set to begin on March 28, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru hosting Sunrisers Hyderabad in the opening match. The initial schedule spans multiple venues including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Guwahati and Mullanpur, and features a mix of single matches and double-headers.
Despite this early release, several high-profile fixtures and key matchups remain unconfirmed, contributing to growing anticipation among stakeholders.
Tournament format remains unchanged despite expansion discussions
While speculation around an expanded IPL season has circulated, the 2026 edition will continue with the existing 74-match structure.
According to InsideSport, discussions had taken place involving the ICC and broadcast stakeholders around increasing the number of matches. However, those plans have not progressed, with scheduling constraints and the existing ICC Future Tours Programme limiting any immediate expansion.
As a result, the current format remains intact, with 10 teams divided into two groups and a schedule structure consistent with recent editions.
Bigger expansion plans pushed to future cycle
The possibility of a longer IPL season has not been ruled out entirely but is now expected to be revisited in the next cycle of international scheduling.
The current FTP window runs until 2027, and any increase in the number of matches is likely to depend on future negotiations involving the ICC and broadcast partners. Factors such as calendar congestion and global scheduling commitments continue to play a significant role in shaping those decisions.
