The IPL 2027 mini-auction will take place on December 16 in Goa, bringing the Indian Premier League‘s player auction back to India after three consecutive editions overseas. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the date to Hindustan Times, while preparations are underway for all 10 franchises to attend the event.
Saikia told Hindustan Times: “Yes, the auction will be held on December 16.”
BCCI begins preparations for IPL 2027 auction
According to Cricbuzz, the BCCI’s logistics team circulated a WhatsApp message to IPL franchises on Saturday, requesting information about the number of representatives each team intends to send to Goa.
The communication, received by multiple franchises, stated: “The IPL 2026 Player Auction will take place on December 16, 2026 at ITC Grand Goa and auction briefing will be held on December 15, 2026.”
The message was intended to facilitate travel and logistical preparations, with a formal communication to franchise owners and Chief Executives expected to follow.
Separately, a source told PTI: “The BCCI has informed the teams on the date of the auction which is December 16 and the auction briefing will be held on December 15.”
IPL auction returns to India after three years overseas
Goa’s selection marks a change of location for one of the IPL’s major annual events, following three successive auctions staged outside India.
Dubai hosted the auction in 2023, followed by the 2024 mega-auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The most recent auction took place in Abu Dhabi in 2025.
The December event will be a mini-auction rather than a mega-auction, with franchises preparing to make additions and adjustments to their squads ahead of the 2027 tournament.
All 10 teams have been asked to submit their final lists of retained and released players by November 15, establishing an important deadline before the auction process moves into its next stage.
IPL auction date clashes with India–Sri Lanka ODI
The December 16 auction is scheduled for the same day as India’s second ODI against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru, creating an overlap between the IPL’s franchise recruitment event and the national team’s international commitments.
The three-match ODI series is scheduled to begin in New Delhi on December 13 and conclude at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Questions have also emerged over the venue for the opening ODI in Delhi. Reports had suggested that the December 13 fixture could be moved, although the BCCI denied plans for a venue change.
There has been no confirmed alteration to the Bengaluru match, leaving the auction and second ODI scheduled for the same date.
Franchises face key decisions before December auction
Beyond finalising their retention and release lists, teams are awaiting clarity on several matters that could influence preparations for IPL 2027.
The BCCI has been considering the future of the Impact Player rule, which was discussed at a recent IPL Governing Council meeting.
The availability of Australian players is another consideration ahead of the season. Australia are scheduled to tour India for five Tests before travelling to England for the Ashes, while several leading players are also expected to feature in the 150th anniversary Test against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from March 11 to 15.
