Australia’s preparations for the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan are set to unfold in phases rather than through a traditional full-squad buildup after Cricket Australia opted against withdrawing players involved in the IPL playoffs. According to a report by Cricbuzz, several Australian cricketers will remain with their franchises through the closing stages of IPL 2026 despite the national team’s limited-overs commitments beginning before the tournament concludes.
A Cricket Australia spokesperson confirmed to Cricbuzz that Australian players participating in the IPL “will still be in the IPL and will complete their commitments.”
The scheduling overlap leaves Australia facing a fragmented lead-in to the Pakistan series, with players expected to arrive at different stages depending on their IPL commitments and playoff qualification scenarios. Australia are scheduled to begin the ODI tour in Rawalpindi on May 30 before the series moves to Lahore for matches on June 2 and June 4, while the IPL final is scheduled to take place in Ahmedabad on May 31.
IPL schedule reshapes Australia planning
The overlap has effectively shifted part of Australia’s squad planning away from selectors and toward the IPL standings table. Franchises still competing for playoff positions are likely to retain several Australian players until the end of the tournament, particularly with qualification battles tightening during the final stretch of the league stage.
Pat Cummins and Travis Head remain central to Sunrisers Hyderabad’s push for a top-four finish, while Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru also continue to rely heavily on Australian players as the playoff race intensifies.
According to cricket.com.au, players attached to teams eliminated before the playoffs could still become available in time for the opening ODI in Pakistan. Lucknow Super Giants pair Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis are among those who may join the national setup earlier if their IPL campaign ends during the league phase, while Cameron Green’s availability could depend on Kolkata Knight Riders’ final position on the table.
The situation has also complicated Australia’s broader white-ball planning across both Pakistan and Bangladesh, with some players now potentially expected to reconnect with the squad only after the Pakistan leg concludes.
Franchises preparing to retain overseas players
Several franchises have already been informed that Australian players are expected to remain in India rather than depart midway through the competition despite the international overlap.
A Sunrisers Hyderabad source told PTI: “Yes, we’ve received communication that the Australian players in our squad will stay back for the IPL.”
The approach underlines the growing influence of franchise scheduling on international white-ball preparation, particularly during compressed global calendars where bilateral tours increasingly overlap with major domestic tournaments.
Workload management becomes a major factor
Australia’s selectors are also balancing longer-term workload considerations as the team moves through a packed international calendar spanning multiple formats and overseas tours. Fast bowlers including Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are among the players whose schedules are likely to be managed carefully ahead of future Test assignments later in the year.
Cricket Australia is still yet to announce its squad for the Pakistan series, leaving flexibility around player availability, travel plans and squad rotation depending on how the IPL playoff picture develops over the coming weeks.
Australia last played a bilateral ODI series in Pakistan in 2022, while Pakistan also defeated Australia 3-0 in a T20I series in Lahore earlier this year ahead of the T20 World Cup.
