The 2025 edition of the TATA Indian Premier League shattered viewership records across both digital and television, with JioStar — the unified identity for JioHotstar and Star Sports — reporting a staggering 840 billion minutes of total watch-time. This makes IPL 2025 the most-watched edition in the league’s history, further cementing its position as a premier global sporting event.
Over the course of the season, JioHotstar alone clocked 384.6 billion minutes of watch-time and more than 23.1 billion video views — a remarkable 29% increase from 2024. The surge in digital engagement was driven by a 49% rise in Connected TV (CTV) usage, underscoring the rapid growth of large-screen digital viewing in India.
On traditional TV, Star Sports delivered 456 billion minutes of live broadcast watch-time — the highest in IPL history — along with the best average TV ratings (TVR) across the viewing universe and critical demographic groups.
IPL 2025 final breaks all-time records
The season culminated in a blockbuster final between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings, which drew an unprecedented 31.7 billion minutes of watch-time across all JioStar platforms. The match set new benchmarks in both digital and TV viewership for a T20 game.
Star Sports registered the highest-ever reach for a T20 match with 169 million viewers and 15 billion minutes of watch-time. Meanwhile, JioHotstar’s broadcast rewrote the digital playbook, drawing 892 million video views, 55 million peak concurrency, and 16.74 billion minutes of watch-time — all all-time records in digital cricket broadcasting.
A season of firsts on and off the field
RCB’s maiden IPL triumph, which also marked Virat Kohli’s long-awaited first title, and 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s record-setting century added emotional resonance to a season already filled with unprecedented milestones.
On the technology front, JioStar introduced a slate of innovations, including MaxView 2.0 — a mobile-first experience featuring intuitive swipe navigation for highlights, and enhanced fan segmentation with dedicated FAST channels for specific audience tribes. Voice-based video search and multilingual VOD content across 12 Indian languages further enhanced accessibility and personalization.
The opening weekend alone saw 49.56 billion minutes of viewership — the highest ever for an IPL start — as over 25 curated feeds were broadcast across TV and digital in multiple formats including 4K with Dolby Atmos, VR 360 Live, Indian Sign Language, live audio descriptive options, and multi-cam perspectives.
A data-driven strategy for fan engagement
JioStar’s approach to IPL 2025 was rooted in a dual strategy of expanding casual engagement while deepening loyalty among core fans.
Sanjog Gupta, CEO – Sports and Live Experiences, JioStar, said, “The incredible viewership numbers are reinforcement of our belief in the commitment to serve fans and the potential for growth of even a scaled property like the TATA IPL. We had a two-pronged approach this season. We wanted to widen the consideration for the tournament experience, by focusing on key viewer cohorts which had a light-touch relationship with IPL while also offering a deep, navigable consumer journey to grow engagement with committed fans.”
Gupta added, “From non-viewers and fringe viewers co-viewing the IPL to deeply immersed fanatics, JioStar offered customized offerings for a wide spectrum of distinct cohorts defined by age, consumption profile and region. From the invite and proposition to the broadcast, we were committed to delivering hyper-personalized experiences that are inclusive, intuitive, interactive, and immersive. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the fans, whose passion and love for the game inspires us. We would also thank BCCI and our partners, whose support is critical in our endeavor to constantly raise the bar on industry-defining experiences we offer on our platforms.”
A new bar for sports broadcasting in India
With its record-shattering numbers, innovative viewing formats, and personalized experiences, IPL 2025 marks a turning point not just for cricket, but for sports broadcasting in India. JioStar’s unified delivery of the tournament across platforms has set a new benchmark for fan engagement and audience reach — and raised expectations for what comes next.
