Cricket South Africa (CSA) is the national governing body for the sport of cricket in South Africa and administers all aspects of South African cricket.
A fixed term position for Head Coach: SA U/19 Men will become available. The successful candidate(s) will be responsible for:
a. Creating a world-class learning and performance environment that accelerates the development of South Africa's most promising young male cricketers toward successful transition into professional and international cricket.
b. Leading, developing and implementing a high-performance coaching and playing programme for the SA U/19 Men), in conjunction with the HP coaching staff, so as to ensure the identified and selected players receive the coaching and experiences for successful transition to the high-performance pathway programmes if selected.
c. Leading, developing and implementing a high-performance coaching and playing programme for the Talent Acceleration Programme in conjunction with the HP coaching staff, so as to ensure the identified and selected players receive the coaching and experiences for successful transition to the high-performance pathway programmes if selected.
d. Developing and implementing a high-performance coaching and playing programme for the Batters Programme, with a specific focus on Black African Batters in the youth pipeline (U/15- U/19), in conjunction with the HP Batting Lead and HP staff, so as to ensure the identified and selected players receive the coaching and experiences for successful transition to the high-performance pathway programmes if selected.
e. Away from the SA U/19 programme, the Head Coach will be expected to work across other HP programmes when needed and as directed by the Head of High Performance.
The more important criterion for the appointment is set out below and although not exhaustive, would serve as a guideline in assessing prospective candidates.
Key job duties/responsibilities:
Key performance areas include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Lead the SA U/19 Men's programme - Preparation
a) Set a clear vision for the SA U/19 Men Programme plans that aligns with the CSA playing philosophy.
b) Has a principled philosophy in developing, motivating and execution of the plan set.
c) Has clear line of sight and purpose - what the team and individual cricketers aim to achieve.
d) Knows what it takes to perform - identifies gaps in performance.
e) Ensure that planning and plans are aligned with the objectives of the CSA strategy for cricket.
f) Use the services of an HP Analyst and CricViz system to prepare for practice sessions and matches.
2. Lead the SA U/19 Men's programme - Managing People
a) Has the capability to have honest and clear conversations.
b) Holistic understanding of people including the background.
c) Ensures their own physical well-being and mental health.
d) Empowers cricketers to perform in their roles.
e) Has effective performance management systems in place
3. Lead the SA U/19 Men's programme - Development of Cricketers
a) Develops cricketer and team competency skills with respect to fielding, bowling, and batting.
b) Leads and encouraging a value-based SA U/19 team culture in line with CSA vision and strategies (not limited to HP Programme).
4. Coaching - Training Session
a) Clear structure and purpose for training sessions.
b) A Coaching Plan is evident that incorporates technical and tactical components and feedback processes. c) Coaching is cricketer-centered and based on the Player Performance Plan and cricketers needs (PDP).
d) Ensure that practice sessions allow cricketers to be self-reliant and have ownership of own game.
e) Plans simulation training that results in high intensity or competitive match situation sessions as requiring cricketer's decision making.
f) Able to adapt session(s) in the moment as circumstance may require.
g) Has a process in place to be able to reflect on the session and coaching effectiveness.
5. Coaching - During Matches
a) Being able to adapt coaching plans as the matches progress.
b) Have the ability to read the team and individual cricketers regarding interventions required during matches.
c) Displays positive verbal and body language towards cricketers and the management team.
d) Helps to establish a positive team and dressing room environment.
e) Have a process to communicate game plan targets.
f) Ensure that role clarity is provided in relation to the team plan.
6. Workload management and data capturing
a) Manage and monitor the workload of players through the Athlete Management System (AMS).in conjunction with the CSA Medical and Science Unit.
b) Oversee the execution of the Personal Development Plans (PDP) and provide at least quarterly reports to the Head of HP and SA U/19 Convener of Selection.
c) Reporting any potential or actual risks, injuries, work-related illnesses and incidents with the intent to eliminate or minimise risks.
d) Provide feedback on the progress and performance of players to the Proteas Head Coach, Director: National Teams & HP (DNTHP), Head of HP, and National Convener of Selection.
e) Player handovers (reports) after each tour must be completed and shared with the Proteas Men's Team Head Coach, DNTHP, Head of HP, and National Convener of Selection.
f) SA U/19 Player handovers (reports) after each tour must be completed and shared with the Head of HP, DNTHP, SA U/19 Convener of Selection, Scouts and Coaching Framework Coaches.
7. Ad Hoc
a) Perform such additional functions, including ad hoc projects, as may be instructed by the Line Manager from time to time.
b) Ensure allocated projects specified by the Line Manager are completed, project deadlines are met. c) Ensure that project delivery does not affect normal deadlines.
Essential requirements pertaining to the candidate's qualifications and experience:
a) A CSA Level 3 Coaching Certificate or equivalent qualification.
b) A valid safeguarding certification.
c) A valid CPR and AED will be advantage
d) A valid driver's licence will be advantage.
e) A minimum of 3 years relevant coaching experience at the elite level.
f) Having playing experience at first-class or international level.
g) Having a diverse coaching experience will be an advantage
h) Having proven success of developing identified players into a high-performing unit will be an advantage.
i) Having relevant experience in the use of AMS will be an advantage.
In addition, the following competencies (skills and behavioural attributes) would be important:
a) HP cricket coaching and talent identification.
b) An understanding of the basic medical and sport science principles that support a High-Performance programme.
c) Knowledge of Cricketing Fraternity/Business.
d) An understanding of the challenges of Black African players within the CSA ecosystem.
e) Basic mentoring skills.
f) Proficient in the use of MS Office (Word, Powerpoint, Excel) and MS Teams.
g) Familiar with cricket analytics software e.g. CricViz.
h) Familiar with mobile ball tracking software e.g. Fulltrack Al.
The role will report to the Head of High Performance. The role requires the ability and willingness to travel, work long hours, over weekends and public holidays where necessary.
