Description

We are seeking an experienced and confident Deputy Chief Steward to support the safe, effective, and professional delivery of event-day stewarding operations. This is a senior leadership role within the event safety structure, working closely with the Chief Steward and Safety Officers to ensure high standards of crowd management and operational control throughout all phases of an event.

The Role

As Deputy Chief Steward, you will act as the primary support to the Chief Steward, providing strong leadership across the venue during event preparation, live delivery, and post-event activities where required. You will play a central role in command, control, and communication, ensuring stewarding teams are effectively deployed, briefed, and supported at all times.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as Deputy to the Chief Steward, supporting the safe and effective delivery of event-day operations
  • Report directly to the Chief Steward and work in close coordination with Safety Officers on duty
  • Provide operational leadership across the venue during event preparation, event delivery, and post-event where necessary, including leading event debriefs with Area Managers
  • Directly manage and support Area Managers, ensuring clear communication and effective deployment across all areas
  • Maintain close operational oversight of Supervisors, providing guidance, direction, and support as required
  • Ensure clear command, control, and communication structures are maintained at all times
  • Support the Chief Steward in ensuring all crowd safety positions are appropriately staffed, briefed, and operationally ready
  • Monitor crowd dynamics, staffing performance, and safety conditions, escalating concerns promptly to the Chief Steward or Safety Officers
  • Assist in the coordination of stewarding and safety resources in response to emerging issues or changes to the operational plan
  • Play a key role in incident management, supporting decision-making and ensuring instructions are effectively relayed through Area Managers and Supervisors
  • Take responsibility for defined areas or functions as delegated by the Chief Steward
  • Support the implementation of emergency procedures
  • Ensure accurate incident reporting and post-event feedback is completed effectively and shared with the Safety Officers
  • Promote a professional, calm, and authoritative presence that reflects best practice in crowd safety and event management

Requirements

Essential Requirements

  • NVQ Level 3 in Spectator Safety
  • Valid SIA Door Supervisor licence
  • Proven experience in a senior stewarding, supervisory, or event safety leadership role
  • Strong understanding of crowd safety principles and event operations
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and authoritative in high-pressure environments
  • Strong availability between May and September, as this period covers our peak event and matchday schedule
