Lucknow adds strategic depth with Williamson appointment
Kane Williamson is set to return to the Indian Premier League in a new off-field role as he joins Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as Strategic Advisor ahead of the 2026 season. The appointment was officially confirmed by Dr. Sanjiv Goenka, owner of LSG, in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Williamson, one of the most respected minds in international cricket, brings with him a wealth of leadership and tactical experience from his time captaining New Zealand across formats.
“His leadership, strategic insight, deep understanding of the game, and ability to inspire players make him an invaluable addition to the team,” said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The 35-year-old has no prior experience as part of a franchise’s support staff, but his stature in world cricket makes this move a natural evolution. Williamson’s new role will see him work alongside head coach Justin Langer and the existing coaching group to help craft the team’s on-field strategies and culture.
Williamson eyes impactful return to IPL setup
Although Williamson has remained an active international cricketer, his IPL career had recently hit a lull. After missing almost the entire 2023 season due to a knee injury while playing for Gujarat Titans, and appearing in just two matches in 2024, he went unsold in the mega auction ahead of IPL 2025.

His return in a strategic capacity rather than as a player marks a new chapter for both him and the franchise.
“I’m really excited to be joining LSG. They have a hugely talented squad and a great group of coaches which I’m looking forward to working alongside. It’s always special being involved in the IPL, the best franchise competition in the game,” said Williamson in an official statement released by the franchise.
Williamson’s involvement with the Super Giants isn’t entirely new — he was part of their Durban-based team in SA20. Now, with his official transition to a leadership role at LSG, the franchise hopes to leverage his game awareness and calm demeanour to influence results from the dugout.
Langer to continue as head coach for 2026
As LSG gears up for IPL 2026, the franchise has also confirmed that Justin Langer will remain head coach, with Bharat Arun staying on as fast-bowling coach. Former England first-class cricketer Carl Crowe has joined the support staff as spin-bowling coach, following a stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders.

LSG will be looking to bounce back after finishing seventh in both IPL 2024 and 2025, despite promising campaigns in their debut seasons, where they placed third in 2022 and 2023. With Williamson joining the leadership group and a refreshed backroom staff, the team is expected to undergo a strategic overhaul ahead of the new season.
Among their major investments, Rishabh Pant emerged as the league’s highest-paid player at the IPL 2025 auction, signing a record deal worth ₹27 crore (approx. US$3.1 million) — a reflection of the franchise’s intent to build a winning core.
As planning intensifies for 2026, LSG’s focus will be on cohesion, experience, and revitalized leadership — and with Kane Williamson now part of that formula, expectations are once again on the rise in Lucknow.
