IPL 2026 mini-auction likely around December 15, with retention deadline set for November 15

The BCCI is expected to finalise IPL 2026 auction plans soon, with player retention lists due by mid-November and the auction likely returning to India after two years overseas.

Auction timing and location still under discussion

The IPL 2026 mini-auction is expected to be held between December 13 and 15, with discussions currently centering on that window. According to Cricbuzz, the IPL Governing Council has not officially confirmed the dates, but internal conversations with franchise officials have helped narrow down the likely period. The player retention deadline is also expected to fall around November 15.

After hosting the last two auctions overseas — in Dubai and Jeddah — the BCCI is reportedly considering holding this year’s event in India, though that decision remains unfinalised.

Retention deadline looms large for franchises

With the retention deadline approaching, franchises are now turning their attention to the critical decisions around who stays and who goes. The November 15 cutoff gives teams a narrow window to evaluate underperformers and finalise which players to release before reshaping their squads for the mini-auction.

While most franchises are expected to retain the core of their squads, teams that finished at the bottom of the table in 2025 — such as Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals — are likely to initiate significant changes.

Players reportedly on the chopping block include Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, Rahul Tripathi, Sam Curran, and Devon Conway, all of whom had underwhelming campaigns for CSK. The franchise is said to have gained ₹9.75 crore (approx. US$1.1 million) in its purse following R Ashwin’s IPL retirement, potentially giving it more room for a squad revamp.

Spotlight on Rajasthan Royals and Sanju Samson

Rajasthan Royals are also at a crossroads. The future of captain Sanju Samson is under speculation, with reports suggesting the franchise may consider trading him, depending on negotiations. Changes in team composition may also be influenced by the return of Kumar Sangakkara to a leadership role in the franchise.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Sangakkara — who has served as RR’s Director of Cricket since 2021 — is expected to step back into the head coaching role following Rahul Dravid’s departure. He has already begun planning for the 2026 season, and his return may shape key decisions around both retention and release.

Earlier discussions had hinted at the release of Sri Lankan spinners Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana, but Sangakkara’s presence could impact that thinking.

Cameron Green set to dominate the mini-auction

Among the names expected to draw heavy interest at the IPL 2026 mini-auction is Australian all-rounder Cameron Green. After missing the previous edition due to injury, Green is widely seen as one of the top targets this year, with several franchises reportedly showing early interest.

Other notable players who could be on the move — though nothing is confirmed — include T Natarajan, Mitchell Starc, Akash Deep, Mayank Yadav, David Miller, and even Venkatesh Iyer, who was the third-most expensive buy in the last auction at ₹23.75 crore (approx. US$2.7 million) by Kolkata Knight Riders.

With major decisions due in the next few weeks and plenty of uncertainty around marquee players, the build-up to IPL 2026 is already intensifying — both on and off the field.
