Former Sri Lanka Captain and Rajasthan Royals Head Coach Kumar Sangakkara has accused Ryanair staff at Dublin Airport of racial discrimination and threatening behaviour towards him and his family, alleging that airline personnel made discriminatory remarks about their passports and threatened to deny them boarding if they challenged the treatment.

The 48-year-old raised the allegations publicly on Wednesday, October 28, through a series of posts on X, prompting responses from other users and further disclosures about the encounter. Sangakkara has not identified the staff members involved or provided details about the flight.

Sangakkara raises allegations against Ryanair staff

The incident occurred at Dublin Airport, where Sangakkara and his family encountered Ryanair gate personnel. Although the former Sri Lankan international did not initially disclose the circumstances surrounding the interaction, he publicly questioned the conduct of the airline’s staff.

Sangakkara wrote on X: “Has anyone experienced discriminatory gate personnel @Ryanair in Dublin? I, with my family, just did and it was shocking. The tone of address and the mishandling of procedure and threatening behavior. Unacceptable for any passenger. First bad experience in Dublin.”

His post subsequently attracted responses from other social media users, including fellow Sri Lankan Sanjiva Weerawarana, who shared his own experiences of discrimination.

Weerawarana wrote on X: “Kumar, I have experienced discrimination in every part of the west. I lived there for 16 years, traveled back and forth for another 25 and now I’m done. Don’t miss it for a bit and will only go for something I need to go to; I see no need to accept being treated like shit.”

Sangakkara responded directly to Weerawarana, writing: “It is quite jarring when you experience it @sanjiva.”

Sangakkara details alleged passport discrimination

A separate exchange developed after X user Meda Carey challenged Sangakkara’s original post, questioning whether the treatment he described necessarily amounted to discrimination.

Carey wrote: “Treating everyone exactly the same isn’t discrimination, even if someone accustomed to special privileges feels slighted by it. Not recognising someone’s status is just neutrality. A wise man once said, when people get used to preferential treatment, equal treatment feels like discrimination. Ryanair don’t promise frills.”

Responding to Carey, Sangakkara wrote: “When told people like you with your kind of passports should expect this treatment and that if we argued against that obviously disgusting comment we would be considered a threat to other passengers and not boarded is not treating everyone exactly the same but it is racist”

Ryanair had not publicly responded to Sangakkara’s allegations at the time of publication of the original reports.

Sangakkara’s role at Rajasthan Royals

Sangakkara currently serves as Head Coach of Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), having returned to the position ahead of the 2026 season following the departure of Rahul Dravid.

He previously held the coaching role from 2021 to 2024 and also served as the franchise’s Director of Cricket. During his earlier tenure, Rajasthan reached the IPL final in 2022, their first appearance in the tournament’s championship match since winning the inaugural edition in 2008. They finished runners-up to Gujarat Titans.

Rajasthan subsequently finished fourth in the 2026 IPL season.

Before moving into coaching and cricket management, Sangakkara established himself as one of Sri Lanka’s most accomplished international players. He retired from international cricket in 2015, having represented his country in 134 Tests, 404 One Day Internationals and 56 Twenty20 Internationals.

His international career included 12,400 Test runs and 14,234 ODI runs, while he was also part of Sri Lanka’s victorious squad at the 2014 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
