Matthew Mott, one of world cricket’s most successful and respected coaches, has been appointed head coach of the Sydney Sixers WBBL team for the next two years, marking a major move for the franchise ahead of WBBL|10.
Highly regarded for his championship-winning pedigree, Mott joins the Sixers women’s program after serving as an assistant with the club’s men’s side last season. He succeeds Charlotte Edwards, who departed the role last month, and will continue to support the BBL squad under Greg Shipperd.
A proven leader with a record of global success
Mott’s coaching résumé is among the most decorated in the modern game. From 2015 to 2022, he led the Australian women’s national team through an era of dominance, capturing two ICC T20 World Cups (2018, 2020), one ICC Women’s World Cup (2022), and four Ashes series victories.
After departing the Australian setup, Mott took charge of England’s men’s white-ball teams, guiding them to the T20 World Cup title in 2022.
A former first-class cricketer for Victoria and Queensland, Mott began his coaching career with Cricket NSW in 2005, making this appointment a full-circle moment.

Commenting on his new role, Mott expressed enthusiasm about deepening his connection with the Sixers and taking the WBBL side into a new era:
“I’m absolutely delighted to be working with the Sixers women’s team. I’ve had a strong connection with the club over many years, so when the opportunity came up, it was one I was really keen to take on.”
“Having coached a number of players in the current squad, I’m looking forward to reconnecting with them — as well as working with some of the younger talent — as we push to secure another WBBL title.”
Mott added that the WBBL list is already full of proven talent, and the team will look to strengthen it further in the Draft to compete for another championship.
