Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has announced a new revenue strategy for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, confirming that the revenue from ICC passes, which is typically allocated to the host country, will now go to the PCB. This change follows significant upgrades to the stadiums, including enhancements such as a new sound system and LED lights.
In a press conference at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, Naqvi highlighted that the stadium upgrades were essential and costly, adding that the PCB had requested revenue instead of the usual ICC complimentary passes to help offset these expenses. “We have requested revenue in place of ICC passes to compensate for the significant expenses during the upgrades,” Naqvi said. He emphasized that the PCB operates independently and does not rely on federal government funding.
Naqvi also confirmed that the Champions Trophy’s opening ceremony would take place on February 16, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as the chief guest. The National Stadium in Karachi will host its opening event on February 11, with President Asif Ali Zardari expected to attend.
Regarding other stadiums, Naqvi mentioned that renovations at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium are nearing completion, with media and VIP boxes ready for the event. “We are nearing completion, and the stadium’s facilities, including the media and VIP boxes, are ready for the mega event,” he added.
In terms of player news, Naqvi shared that young opener Saim Ayub will need another four to five weeks of rest following medical advice.
As for Pakistan’s preparations for the Champions Trophy, Naqvi confirmed that everything is in place for a successful tournament. He also mentioned the formation of separate teams for white-ball and red-ball formats in 2026 as part of the PCB’s future plans.
The chairman reaffirmed that the PCB’s focus remains on the safety and enjoyment of cricket fans across the country, ensuring that the ICC Champions Trophy will be a memorable event. The tournament begins on February 19, with Pakistan facing New Zealand in the opening match at Karachi’s National Stadium. Matches will also be held across Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Dubai.
