Former India captain doubles down as investor and brand ambassador, backing Kuku’s AI-driven push into regional, mobile-first storytelling and microdrama content.

In a significant crossover between sport, technology, and digital media, MS Dhoni has invested in Kuku, while also signing on as the brand ambassador for its short-form video platform, Kuku TV.

The move positions the former India captain at the heart of one of the fastest-growing segments in India’s content economy: AI-driven, mobile-first storytelling.

A strategic bet on AI-driven storytelling

Dhoni’s dual role as investor and ambassador underscores a broader shift in athlete capital toward emerging tech-enabled media platforms, particularly those targeting India’s rapidly expanding regional audiences.

Explaining his decision, Dhoni said:

“I chose to invest in Kuku and also come on board as the ambassador for Kuku TV, because the platform really stood out to me. It has built a differentiated entertainment experience for audiences across India, spanning multiple languages and formats. The growth has been impressive, and I connect strongly with the founders, who come from small towns like mine and have built something of this scale. I believe in their vision of building an AI-driven storytelling platform from Bharat, for Bharat, and for the world.”

Kuku operates across short-form video, audio, and learning-based formats through its ecosystem, including Kuku TV and Kuku FM. Since its launch in 2018, the company has scaled to over 350 million installs and built a content library exceeding 20,000 titles, with strong traction in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets.

Why Kuku is betting on Dhoni

For Kuku, Dhoni represents more than just a celebrity endorsement — he aligns with the company’s positioning as a platform built for “Bharat” audiences.

Kuku Co-Founder and COO Vinod Kumar Meena said:

“Our beloved Thala is one of the rare personalities with truly nationwide appeal. As we build Kuku for all of India, that connection makes him a natural fit for us.”

The partnership also reflects a shared philosophy around unconventional decision-making — a trait Dhoni is widely known for in cricketing circles.

Kuku Co-Founder and CEO Lal Chand Bisu added:

“MS Dhoni is known for backing bold decisions that others might hesitate to take. At Kuku, we are also taking bold bets. That spirit of unconventional thinking resonates deeply with us.”

Building an AI-first content ecosystem

At the core of Kuku’s strategy is its AI-driven storytelling engine, designed to serve both creators and consumers with personalized, scalable content formats.

Kuku Co-Founder and CTO Vikas Goyal highlighted the importance of Dhoni’s involvement from a product and audience perspective:

“MSD has a unique understanding of people. As we build for both creators and consumers, that perspective will be incredibly valuable, especially as we continue strengthening our AI-driven storytelling stack.”

The company is leaning into the fast-growing “microdrama” format — short, engaging narratives optimized for mobile consumption — a category gaining momentum as viewing habits shift toward bite-sized content.

Investor confidence and global ambitions

Dhoni’s investment comes alongside backing from institutional investors, reinforcing confidence in Kuku’s long-term vision to scale beyond India.

Panthera Peak Capital Managing Director Nikhil Bhandarkar said:

“Kuku’s vision, execution, and clarity of thought are exceptional, qualities that closely mirror MS Dhoni’s approach. We are excited to partner with the team as they build Kuku into a global entertainment platform.”

The bigger picture: athletes moving into tech and media

Dhoni’s move is emblematic of a wider trend: elite athletes increasingly investing in technology-led media ventures, particularly those intersecting AI, regional content, and mobile consumption.

With India’s digital entertainment market evolving rapidly — driven by smartphone penetration and demand for vernacular content — platforms like Kuku are positioning themselves at the convergence of technology and storytelling.

The launch of Kuku TV’s campaign, “Dhoni Watches Kuku TV,” further cements the partnership, leveraging Dhoni’s persona of instinctive decision-making to reinforce the platform’s appeal as a destination for quick, engaging content.

As the lines between sport, entertainment, and technology continue to blur, Dhoni’s latest move signals where the next wave of cricket-linked capital — and influence — may be headed.
