A landmark moment in Nepal cricket history

Nepal achieved a monumental milestone on Saturday, defeating two-time T20 world champions West Indies by 19 runs in Sharjah. The result not only marked Nepal’s first-ever victory over a Full Member across any format, but it also underscored their growing status in international cricket.

While Nepal had previously beaten Afghanistan in 2014, that came when Afghanistan was still an Associate Member. This win, therefore, stands as the country’s most significant result to date—and came in their maiden T20I encounter and first-ever bilateral series against a Full Member.

Batting first: Nepal overcomes early collapse to post 148

After being sent in to bat, Nepal found themselves in early trouble at 12 for 2, with both openers back in the pavilion within the first four overs. Akeal Hosein beat Kushal Bhurtel with a sharp arm ball to have him stumped, while Aasif Sheikh was caught by a backpedalling Jason Holder after a mistimed lofted shot.

The innings stabilized thanks to a crucial 58-run partnership between captain Rohit Paudel and the aggressive Kushal Malla. The pair not only rebuilt but also shifted momentum during the middle overs.

Malla provided the spark with boundaries off Fabian Allen and a six off Obed McCoy, while Paudel found rhythm with back-to-back fours off debutant Ramon Simmonds. Malla’s departure for 30 and Paudel’s for 38, both dismissed by debutant legspinner Navin Bidaisee, briefly halted Nepal’s progress.

Still, contributions from Dipendra Singh Airee (24) and Gulsan Jha kept the scoreboard ticking. Holder threatened to derail the innings in the 19th over, picking up three wickets, but West Indies’ inconsistent catching—ranging from spectacular to sloppy—allowed Nepal to post a competitive 148 for 8.

Spin, fielding brilliance hand Nepal famous win

West Indies’ chase began with a flourish as Kyle Mayers hit a boundary off the first ball. But momentum shifted almost immediately when Bhurtel produced a direct hit to run out Mayers in the second over.

Debutant Ackeem Auguste provided brief resistance with two towering sixes, but Nepal’s spinners quickly took control. Paudel and left-arm spinner Lalit Rajbanshi stifled the scoring during the middle overs, conceding just 16 runs and picking up a wicket each in a four-over stretch.

As the required rate climbed, Nepal’s fielding continued to shine. Airee delivered a game-changing moment when he fired a bullet throw to catch Keacy Carty short of his crease after a misjudged run.

Holder, West Indies’ last major hope, managed only 5 before falling to Bhurtel, who had a strong all-round performance. Though Allen and Hosein landed some late blows, the target proved out of reach.

The Caribbean side needed 70 off the final five overs, and 49 off the last three. Hosein was dropped twice in the 18th over—both chances resulting in boundaries—but Karan KC struck back in the 19th to dismiss him and extinguish any hopes of a West Indies comeback.

Nepal outplays West Indies across departments

The win wasn’t just about a single standout performance; it was a complete team effort. Six Nepalese batters cleared the boundary, six bowlers claimed at least one wicket, and their fielding was consistently sharp—punctuated by a game-defining run-out and relentless pressure in the field.

This wasn’t just a win; it was a statement. In their first-ever bilateral T20I series against a Full Member, Nepal defeated a West Indies side that, despite missing some regulars, featured world-class talent and a deep T20 pedigree.

What this win means for Nepal cricket

For a nation with aspirations of climbing the ranks in world cricket, this victory serves as both a breakthrough and a catalyst. With passionate fan support and a growing player base, Nepal’s triumph over a cricketing powerhouse like West Indies will resonate far beyond the final score.

The result could also play a significant role in boosting the country’s case for more bilateral series with Full Members, further exposure in ICC events, and greater recognition within the global cricket establishment.

Nepal has arrived—and the cricketing world is taking notice.
