India‘s decision to play all their Champions Trophy matches in Dubai, instead of traveling to Pakistan, has drawn criticism.
The International Cricket Council‘s (ICC’s) approval of this arrangement has come under scrutiny, with several prominent figures in the sport questioning the fairness of the decision.
Pat Cummins, Australia’s regular cricket captain, expressed his concerns about the advantage this could give India. “I think it’s good that the tournament can go on, but obviously it does give them (India) a huge advantage playing on the same ground. They already look very strong and they’ve got that obvious benefit of playing all their games there,” he said during an interaction with Yahoo Sports Australia.
Cummins, currently sidelined due to injury, will miss the ongoing tournament.
England current commentator and former cricketer Jonathan Agnew also weighed in, calling the decision “a farce.”
The disagreement stems in part from India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan for the eight-nation Champions Trophy tournament, which began on Wednesday. While six national teams have traveled to Pakistan, India has instead chosen to leverage its considerable influence within the ICC, opting to play all its fixtures—including the high-profile match against Pakistan—at a neutral venue, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
India has not competed in Pakistan since 2008, but it is worth noting that Pakistan participated in India during the 2023 World Cup. The tournament, which features the game’s 50-over format, is highly competitive, and the ongoing controversy over the venue choice adds another layer of complexity to the proceedings.
