PCB grants clearance after initial NOC suspension
In a turnaround that will shape the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has granted No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to several of its top players, clearing them to participate in Season 15 of Australia’s flagship T20 tournament. According to Geo News, both the players and Cricket Australia (CA) have been officially informed of the decision, allowing those with pre-existing contracts and approvals to travel for the league.
The green light follows weeks of speculation and uncertainty. In September, the PCB had suspended all NOCs for overseas league participation, following Pakistan’s narrow defeat by India in the Asia Cup final. The board’s statement at the time read: “With the approval of the Chairman PCB, all No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for players with respect to participation in leagues and other out-of-country tournaments are hereby put on hold until further orders.”
This left top names like Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Mohammad Rizwan in limbo, as franchises in the BBL scrambled to revise plans and line-ups. However, the PCB has now made an exception for those who already held valid contracts and prior approvals — a move welcomed by players, fans, and league officials.
Cricket Australia confirms player participation
The confirmation was reinforced over the weekend when Cricket Australia Chief Executive Todd Greenberg addressed the situation on Saturday. Greenberg said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo: “That came through last week.”
He added: “So they’ll all be playing, they’ve all been cleared to play, which we’re really excited about because we’ve got some great Pakistan players in the BBL, so looking forward to seeing them here this summer.”
Greenberg also emphasized the value Pakistani talent brings to the tournament. “The flair of Pakistani cricket brings excitement and quality to our league, both on and off the field,” Greenberg said, as quoted by CricketWinner.com.
With CA now preparing to welcome the players, anticipation around their presence has grown significantly among fans and franchises.
Star-studded lineup to headline BBL Season 15
Six Pakistani players are confirmed to participate in the upcoming season, which kicks off December 14 and runs through January 25, 2026. Among them, several are already associated with prominent BBL teams and are expected to play key roles.
- Babar Azam will make his BBL debut with the Sydney Sixers, who have created a dedicated fan zone named “Babaristan” in his honour.
- Shaheen Afridi was signed by Brisbane Heat as their first overseas and platinum pick.
- Mohammad Rizwan joins the Melbourne Renegades, where his glovework and consistency will be key.
- Haris Rauf, a BBL veteran, will continue with the Melbourne Stars.
- Shadab Khan returns to the Sydney Thunder as a marquee all-rounder.
- Hasan Ali will play for Adelaide Strikers.
According to reports, some franchises have gone as far as setting up special seating areas and fan experiences themed around the Pakistani stars. Brisbane Heat, for example, have created a “Shaheen zone,” while the Melbourne Stars have customized viewing platforms for Rauf supporters.
BBL hopes for boost in engagement and viewership
The arrival of Pakistani players is expected to drive up fan engagement, both at stadiums and across broadcast platforms. Analysts anticipate a potential 15-20% bump in viewership, driven by international audiences and increased local interest in marquee fixtures. With the Sydney Sixers set to open the season against the Perth Scorchers at Perth Stadium, Babar Azam’s debut in that game is expected to draw significant attention.
The PCB’s latest stance also suggests a measured softening in its policy, reportedly now allowing players to participate in up to two foreign leagues annually — provided they are fit and available for national duties, particularly for upcoming tri-series involving Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe..
