The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering appointing Jason Gillespie as the all-format head coach of the national team if the ongoing white-ball tour of Australia yields “satisfactory” results, according to sources.

Gillespie, currently the Test team head coach, has also taken charge of the white-ball side in Australia following Gary Kirsten’s unexpected resignation.

“For the moment, the Board is working on a plan to appoint Jason Gillespie as all-format head coach instead of advertising for new candidates,” a PCB source said.

“If Pakistan performs satisfactorily in the remaining games in Australia, then in all probability, Gillespie would be asked to take over as all formats head coach,” the source added.

Pakistan lost the opening ODI against Australia by two wickets in Melbourne on November 4. They are scheduled to play two more ODIs on Friday (Adelaide) and Sunday (Perth), followed by three T20Is on November 14, 16, and 18.

The source mentioned that any final decision will be made before the team departs for a white-ball series in Zimbabwe immediately after the Australia tour.

The PCB is hopeful that Gillespie will agree to become the all-format head coach, at least until next April. If things don’t work out with Gillespie, the PCB has shortlisted three former Pakistan players, including ex-Test spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, as alternatives.

“But, the PCB’s preference is to have Gillespie to also be white-ball head coach if he agrees,” the source added.
