Merit-based overhaul planned for Pakistan’s selection structure

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly preparing for a significant shake-up of its national selection committee, with Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, and Aleem Dar among the high-profile names expected to be removed from their roles.

According to Geo Super, the move stems from concerns about inactive participation by several selectors during recent squad decisions, as well as a broader effort to return to merit-based, performance-driven selection policies.

PCB expected to retain only Aqib Javed in revamped panel

Sources suggest that at least three current members will be replaced, with former fast bowler Aqib Javed likely to keep his position. The PCB aims to introduce selectors who will focus on identifying emerging talent based on form, fitness, and reasoning, rather than simply endorsing prior decisions.

Both Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali reportedly did not attend recent selection discussions, including those leading up to the Bangladesh series. Aleem Dar is also unlikely to continue in any official selection capacity.

Surprise meeting in Islamabad sparks speculation

Two former Test cricketers were unexpectedly invited to a selection meeting in Islamabad—raising speculation about new appointments, though their future involvement is not yet confirmed. That meeting included Mike Hesson, Salman Ali Agha, Aqib Javed, Aleem Dar, and Hasan Cheema.

This wasn’t an isolated case. Before the New Zealand series, the selection committee and team mentor convened to finalize decisions, with input provided by several officials. However, sources noted a lack of alignment and clarity in recent decisions.

Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan under T20I review

The PCB is also reportedly reviewing the T20I futures of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. While both are expected to remain key figures in Pakistan’s ODI and Test squads, their roles in the T20I setup could change, according to sources familiar with internal discussions.

New direction for Pakistan cricket

This overhaul reflects a strategic shift by the PCB to create a more transparent and accountable selection process. With criticism mounting over unclear squad building and passive decision-making, the board wants to align selection with long-term team development goals.

“We need selectors who can justify their decisions, back young talent, and help build a consistent squad identity,” said a source close to the developments. “This is about more than names—it’s about restoring credibility.”

The coming weeks are expected to bring sweeping changes behind the scenes, with selectors, players, and staff facing reassessment as the PCB plots a new path forward.
