Perth Scorchers and WA Cricket strengthened their ongoing partnership with Persatuan Cricket Indonesia (PCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) through a week-long cricket development initiative held earlier this month in Bali.

Strengthening ties through high-performance collaboration

Eleven WA Cricket High-Performance staff, including Perth Scorchers Head Coaches Becky Grundy and Adam Voges, along with General Manager of High Performance & Elite Teams Kade Harvey, spent five days with PCI’s High-Performance program to deliver workshops, run practical training, and plan strategic growth.

The visit marked a key milestone in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between WA Cricket and PCI, which is structured around four pillars: High Performance Support, Athlete Development, Coach Development, and Facility Development.

On-ground workshops and coaching elevate local talent

WA staff conducted a site visit to PCI’s High-Performance headquarters in Bali and reviewed plans for a new stadium alongside ICC and PCI officials. Turf Manager Nathan Saville provided insights into infrastructure, drainage and pitch development.

Workshops focused on sports science, sports medicine, and mental skills were led by Toby Horak (Head Physical Performance Coach) and Jack Hudson-Williams (Lead Sport Psychologist). Coaches Grundy and Voges led high-impact practical sessions designed to introduce best practices and modern training approaches to Indonesian players.

Match simulation and umpire training round off the week

Umpire development was also a key focus, with Level 2 Coaching and Level 1/2 Umpiring courses conducted by WA Cricket Umpire Coach James Hewitt. The week concluded with a simulated match scenario, allowing players, coaches, and umpires to apply their learning in real-time conditions.

The Australian Consul-General in Bali, Ms. Jo Stevens, attended the final session, showing diplomatic support for the joint initiative and its community-building objectives.

Pathway development and future player exchanges

With WA Cricket considered one of Australia’s most successful high-performance programs, the organization will continue working closely with PCI to deliver tailored strength and conditioning programs. Harvey noted the potential for future player exchange:

“It’s early stages but the week was very helpful. Whether there are opportunities for their players to play Premier Cricket here, we’d be open to supporting that.”

He added:

“It shines a light on the pathway for Indonesian players to break through and maybe one day play in the Big Bash League. That kind of visibility can only inspire the next generation.”

Government backing for international cricket cooperation

This initiative is supported by the WA Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, which backs WA Cricket and the Perth Scorchers at all levels of the game, including through its international development partnership with PCI.

Sport and recreation continue to foster vibrant, inclusive and connected communities across Western Australia.
