PSL expansion draws elite bidders ahead of January 8 auction
The Pakistan Super League is poised for a major leap in 2026, as the Pakistan Cricket Board prepares to introduce two new franchises to the tournament. According to a report by Geo News, the PCB has completed technical evaluations of all interested parties, and approved ten with the franchise auction scheduled to take place on January 8 at the Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad.
Four major business entities have been revealed as confirmed bidders, marking a high-profile contest to join the PSL’s next phase of growth.
Ali Tareen eyes a return after exit from Multan Sultans
Leading the list is the Tareen Group, headed by businessman Ali Khan Tareen. A familiar face in PSL circles, Tareen was previously the owner of Multan Sultans, a team his family acquired in 2018 and helped transform into a dominant force—winning the title in 2021 and reaching multiple finals.
However, his tenure ended in a bitter dispute with the PCB over contract renewal terms and governance disagreements. Tareen was notably the only franchise owner not offered a 10-year extension, and the situation escalated after the PCB issued a legal notice citing alleged breaches. He officially stepped away in late 2025. With that exit now complete, Tareen is eligible once again to re-enter the league through one of the new franchises.
OZ Group, VGO TEL, and Inverex also in the running
The competition for ownership extends beyond familiar names. Hamza Majeed’s OZ Group has formally entered the race, continuing its push into sports and entertainment investments.
Also confirmed as a bidder is VGO TEL, a Karachi-based consumer electronics company led by CEO Naveed Gaba. The group’s application reflects growing corporate confidence in the PSL’s brand value and expansion potential.
Another notable entrant is Inverex, one of Pakistan’s leading renewable energy firms. Its participation signals broader cross-industry interest in PSL ownership, with the league increasingly viewed as a national-level commercial opportunity.
PSL begins showcasing bidding activity on social platforms
While the full list of bidders has not been released publicly, the PSL has begun officially highlighting some of the bidding activity across its social media platforms. The league has uploaded videos and images featuring the CEOs of confirmed bidders, signaling the start of its formal pre-auction rollout.
These updates have helped build anticipation ahead of the auction, while giving fans a glimpse into the business dynamics behind the league’s expansion.
New cities offer fresh ground for PSL growth
Once the auction concludes, the successful bidders will be able to select a home base from a PCB-approved list of cities. Options include Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Hyderabad, Sialkot, Muzaffarabad, and Gilgit—each representing an untapped market with regional fan potential.
As anticipation builds ahead of January 8, the PSL’s expansion is shaping up to be a pivotal moment—bringing together legacy figures like Tareen and ambitious new players, all vying for a stake in the league’s next chapter.
