In a bold bid to tackle Punjab’s drug crisis and reignite its sporting heritage, the Bhagwant Mann-led government has officially greenlit the Punjab Cricket League (PCL)—a professional T20 competition modeled on the Indian Premier League (IPL) and set to roll out across the state with institutional backing from the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
This new league marks a strategic shift from symbolic gestures to structural reform, using sport not just for entertainment or outreach, but as a cornerstone for youth empowerment, social development, and long-term talent development.
IPL-style league with district and regional teams
The Punjab Cricket League will feature district and regional teams representing key regions such as Majha, Doaba, and Malwa, much like IPL franchises. This format is designed to spark local engagement while also creating a clear talent pipeline from grassroots to the professional level.
“The state government will collaborate with the Punjab Cricket Association and the Board of Control for Cricket in India to organise the Punjab Cricket League for grooming the youth of the state,” Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said.
The PCL isn’t just about cricket. It’s envisioned as the foundation of a broader sports ecosystem, with similar district- and state-level leagues planned across Volleyball, Football, Hockey, Basketball, Kho-Kho, and Kabaddi. The state aims to use this infrastructure to identify and develop young talent, creating viable career paths and national representation opportunities for Punjab’s youth.
Battling Punjab’s drug crisis through sport
Punjab’s drug addiction crisis has long been a concern, particularly among the youth. By focusing on sports as a vehicle for discipline, fitness, and achievement, the Mann government is using the PCL to address the issue at its roots.
Chairing a review meeting with senior officials, the Chief Minister made clear the government’s intent to transform sports culture across the state.
Sharing a few snippets from the meeting, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann wrote: “Today in Chandigarh, held a meeting with senior officials of the Department of Sports and Youth Services to discuss various issues, with a focused deliberation on promoting sports culture across the state. All officials were directed to make their maximum contribution towards encouraging youth to take up sports, with the objective of building a healthy and fit society. The government is consistently working to restore sports culture in Punjab and to reconnect the youth with playgrounds across the state.”
Mann emphasized the transformative power of structured sporting initiatives and cited global examples to underscore PCL’s potential.
“Cricketers like Imran Khan and Arjuna Ranatunge gave several renowned players to world cricket through similar initiatives, and this league will go a long way in emerging Punjab as a nursery of cricketing talent,” he said.
Building a sustainable talent and sports culture
While the immediate focus is on the T20 format and cricket’s mass appeal, the PCL is part of a deeper, more sustained effort to create structured development pathways across sports disciplines in Punjab.
The government’s vision is to use the league to reignite Punjab’s rich sporting legacy and position the state as a national leader in sports development. By institutionalizing these efforts and aligning with national governing bodies like the BCCI, the state is signaling its seriousness in producing future sporting icons from Punjab.
