Rajasthan Royals have confirmed that Rahul Dravid will conclude his tenure as head coach ahead of the IPL 2026 season, ending a multi-year association with the franchise that began over a decade ago.

Dravid, who first joined Rajasthan Royals as a player in 2011 and served as head coach during the IPL 2025 season, has decided not to take on a broader role offered as part of a recent structural review within the franchise.

“Rahul has been central to the Royals’ journey over many years. His leadership has influenced a generation of players, built strong values within the squad, and left an indelible mark on the culture of the franchise,” the Royals said in a statement.

“The Rajasthan Royals, its players, and millions of fans worldwide extend heartfelt thanks to Rahul for his remarkable service to the franchise.”

Dravid’s enduring legacy with the Royals

Dravid’s journey with Rajasthan began in 2011 when he played under Shane Warne before taking over as captain in 2012. He captained the Royals in 40 matches, securing 23 wins — a win percentage of 57.50%, the highest among Royals skippers with 20 or more games.

He led the team to a third-place finish in IPL 2013 and guided them to the final of the Champions League T20 that same year.

After retiring from playing, Dravid transitioned into a mentorship role with Rajasthan Royals from 2014 to 2015, a period that saw the rise of now-household names like Sanju Samson and Ajinkya Rahane, as well as the emergence of Pravin Tambe, who made his debut at age 41 without prior top-level experience.

Return to head coach role in IPL 2025

Dravid returned to Rajasthan Royals as head coach for the IPL 2025 season, overseeing the development of young talents like teenage pace sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

Though his latest stint lasted just one season, Dravid’s influence on team culture, player development, and leadership structures has left a lasting legacy.

What’s next for Rajasthan Royals?

While the Royals are expected to announce a new head coach ahead of IPL 2026, the departure of a seasoned mentor like Dravid signals a new chapter for the franchise as it continues to invest in youth development and high-performance culture.

Fans of the Royals and Indian cricket will continue to watch with interest as Dravid’s career evolves beyond the IPL coaching circuit.
