Governance deadlock clouds IPL planning in Rajasthan
As preparations for the next Indian Premier League season gather pace, Jaipur’s place on the IPL map remains uncertain. Prolonged administrative instability within the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) has once again raised questions over whether the state will be cleared to host matches, according to a report by ETV Bharat.
The RCA has been run by a government-appointed ad hoc committee for the past two years, a temporary arrangement meant to facilitate elections that has instead been prolonged amid repeated controversies. The lack of an elected body has become a central concern for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which prefers to deal directly with its member associations when awarding hosting rights.
Rajasthan Royals await clarity as BCCI weighs options
With no definitive resolution in sight, Rajasthan Royals have been forced into a holding pattern. Team official Rajiv Khanna said the franchise is staying engaged with authorities while awaiting a final call. “We are closely monitoring the situation and have discussed the matter with the state’s Sports Department several times,” Khanna said, as quoted by ETV Bharat. He added, “We will participate in the event as per the BCCI’s orders.”
For the past two seasons, IPL matches in Jaipur have been coordinated by the state government rather than the RCA, reflecting the BCCI’s lack of confidence in the association’s current structure. That workaround itself has been a reminder of how far the situation has drifted from normal operating procedures.
BCCI concerns grow amid unresolved disputes
The BCCI has previously indicated that the continuation of the ad hoc committee makes the RCA an unsuitable host. Earlier this year, it made clear that if the prevailing conditions continued, future requests to stage IPL matches at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium would not be entertained.
Matters have been further complicated by internal disputes within the ad hoc committee. Former convener and BJP MLA Jaideep Bihani publicly accused Rajasthan Royals of match-fixing during the IPL, a claim that triggered widespread controversy and ultimately led to his removal. However, disagreements among committee members have persisted, prompting court intervention and the appointment of an ombudsman.
Administrative chaos impacts players and logistics
The governance turmoil has not been limited to boardroom battles. Operational lapses have also surfaced, including disruptions to player travel arrangements. At one point, members of the women’s team were reportedly stranded in Nagpur due to the absence of return tickets, underscoring the administrative disarray surrounding the association.
Such incidents have only reinforced the BCCI’s position that stable and accountable governance is a prerequisite for hosting high-profile tournaments like the IPL.
Elections and venue control key to Jaipur’s IPL future
At the heart of the issue lies the absence of RCA elections. Until a duly elected body takes charge, uncertainty will continue to surround Jaipur’s IPL prospects. The situation is further complicated by the expiry of the memorandum of understanding between the RCA and the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, which is currently under the control of the Rajasthan State Sports Council.
Even if elections are eventually held and hosting rights are restored, questions remain over venue management and whether the Sports Council would again need to step in to organise matches. Until these issues are resolved, Jaipur’s status as an IPL venue remains firmly in limbo.
