Ashwin set for historic dual league stint

Ravichandran Ashwin is poised to make history this winter by featuring in both the UAE’s International League T20 (ILT20) and Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), with the two competitions running almost simultaneously. The 39-year-old, who retired from international cricket and the IPL earlier this year, has positioned himself as one of the most sought-after names in franchise cricket.

According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, Ashwin has entered the ILT20 auction with the highest base price of US$120,000 (approx. ₹1.06 crore), the only player listed in six figures. The auction will be held in Dubai on October 1, with the tournament scheduled from December 2 to January 4, 2026.

BBL sides circle as Warner and Ponting lead interest

In addition to the ILT20, Ashwin is in advanced talks with up to four BBL teams, including the Sydney Thunder, Hobart Hurricanes, Sydney Sixers, and Adelaide Strikers. The frontrunners are believed to be the David Warner-led Hurricanes and the Ricky Ponting-coached Thunder, with a deal expected to be finalised soon.

If confirmed, Ashwin would become the first capped male Indian player to appear in the BBL, following in the footsteps of Unmukt Chand, the only Indian to previously feature in the league. He is likely to be available for the final three or four games of the season, as well as the final if his team qualifies, with a clause also covering the 2026–27 season. The upcoming BBL season is currently scheduled to be played December 14, 2025 – January 25, 2026.

Record ILT20 auction entry

Ashwin’s entry into the ILT20 marks a significant milestone for the league, which is entering its fourth season. The off-spinner is among 24 Indians included in the longlist of nearly 800 players, though he stands apart as the most expensive.

ILT20 franchises are working with an auction purse of US$800,000 each, in addition to leftover funds from US$1.2 million in direct signings and retentions. Teams must spend at least US$1.5 million and no more than US$2 million, with the option to add two wildcard players for up to US$250,000.

Ashwin, who has taken 765 wickets across international formats and 187 in the IPL, brings not only bowling depth but also leadership and experience.

ILT20 CEO hails Ashwin’s value

David White, CEO of the ILT20, described Ashwin as an ‘intellect of the game’ and suggested he could offer much more than just on-field performances.

“I think we’re very open to anything like that. Not only his playing and coaching, but also his analytical skills. He has his own media company, which he’s working on. We would welcome all aspects,” White said, as quoted by Times of India, hinting at the possibility of Ashwin taking on a player-cum-coach role.

What Ashwin’s move means

The dual pursuit of Ashwin by ILT20 franchises and BBL teams highlights the growing competition among leagues for top talent. His presence would elevate the ILT20’s profile and add star power to the BBL, where overseas slots are limited to three per playing XI.

For Ashwin, it signals the beginning of a new chapter in franchise cricket after a decorated international career. For both leagues, it represents a chance to bring in one of cricket’s sharpest minds and most experienced campaigners, capable of contributing both on and off the field.
