Dan Christian is set to make a surprise return to the BBL for the Sydney Thunder as the team faces an injury crisis during the crucial stage of the season.
The 41-year-old all-rounder, a key figure in the domestic T20 competition since its inception before retiring two years ago, had joined the Thunder’s coaching staff last season. However, a collision between Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft has left both players sidelined, prompting the Thunder to include Christian in their 14-man squad for Monday night’s game.
Christian, who has been playing grade cricket for UNSW, could now return to the BBL.
“We’re very fortunate to have Dan already within the club,” general manager Trent Copeland said in a statement on Sunday. “He’s a legend of the BBL, and we’ve got no doubt he’s still up to the level. We can’t wait to see him jump back into this environment and make an impact.
“This season, our team has demonstrated tremendous character in every performance, and tomorrow night’s match against the Heat will be no exception.”
In addition to Sams and Bancroft, who could miss the rest of the tournament, the Thunder are also without Jason Sangha (biceps) and Tanveer Sangha (side strain). Sam Konstas is expected to return this week following his Test duties, while Pat Cummins remains a potential option.
Cummins, who last played in the BBL in 2019, is signed to the Thunder as a supplementary player but has indicated he is unlikely to travel to Sri Lanka for a Test tour later this month.
David Warner’s Thunder currently sit in second place on the Big Bash ladder after five matches, with their only loss coming in a thrilling clash against the Sydney Sixers.
