Ponting emerges as preferred choice for Welsh Fire
Ricky Ponting has been identified as the leading candidate to take over as head coach of Welsh Fire ahead of the 2026 edition of The Hundred, as the franchise looks to kickstart a new chapter under fresh ownership and with renewed ambition.
According to BBC Sport’s Tim Abraham, Welsh Fire are preparing to approach the former Australian captain for formal discussions. The move would mark a major coup for the Cardiff-based outfit, as Ponting remains one of the most respected figures in world cricket — both as a tactician and as a proven leader across multiple formats and leagues.
Strong coaching pedigree and global credentials
Ponting’s coaching résumé is one of the most accomplished in the franchise game. He led Mumbai Indians to the IPL title in 2015 and oversaw a successful seven-year tenure at Delhi Capitals, guiding them to the playoffs on three occasions.
Currently, Ponting serves as head coach of both Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League and Washington Freedom in the United States’ Major League Cricket (MLC). His success in the American league has been particularly noteworthy — he guided Freedom to their first MLC title in 2024, and the team narrowly missed a second consecutive title this year, falling to MI New York in a close final.
Strategic ownership ties and timing
Ponting’s connection to Welsh Fire goes beyond just coaching pedigree. Washington Freedom’s owners, led by tech entrepreneur Sanjay Govil, acquired a 50% stake in the Welsh Fire franchise earlier this year in a £40 million deal. That ownership link is seen as a key factor behind the pursuit of Ponting, whose coaching style and stature align with the ownership group’s ambitions for the team and the broader growth of The Hundred.
The franchise is hoping Ponting’s experience and profile can energize the squad and fan base alike, especially after a disappointing 2025 campaign that saw the team finish at the bottom of the table.
End of the Mike Hussey era
Welsh Fire are set for a coaching reset after three seasons under fellow Australian Mike Hussey, who took over in 2023 following Gary Kirsten’s exit. Hussey led the team to its best-ever finish — fourth place in his debut season — narrowly missing out on an Eliminator berth due to net run rate.
However, the team’s performance declined sharply after that initial promise, culminating in a last-place finish this year. With a new era of The Hundred emerging on the back of increased franchise investment, the Fire are looking to pivot toward a high-profile, globally experienced coaching figure.
Ponting’s long-standing ECB links
This wouldn’t be Ponting’s first flirtation with coaching roles in English cricket. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had targeted Ponting for a role in The Hundred back in 2019, though talks did not come to fruition. He was also linked to the England men’s white-ball head coach position in 2024 but ultimately declined, citing the time demands of international coaching.
Ponting, who represented Australia in 560 matches between 1995 and 2012, remains one of the most decorated captains in cricket history. His combination of stature, tactical acumen, and deep franchise experience makes him the standout candidate to lead Welsh Fire into its next phase.
