Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Titans have been presented with the blueprint for a potentially blockbuster IPL trade, with former India batter Aakash Chopra suggesting the two franchises could find common ground around their respective Indian batting and fast-bowling resources.
Rinku Singh is central to Chopra’s thinking on what KKR could offer, while Gujarat Titans’ pool of Indian pacers provides potential options in the opposite direction. Any such move would require both franchises to consider giving up significant domestic talent rather than simply reshaping the fringes of their squads.
What could bring KKR and Gujarat Titans to the table
KKR’s potential interest in an Indian fast bowler could provide the foundation for discussions with Gujarat Titans. The difficulty would be establishing an exchange that delivers enough value for Kolkata to consider parting with one of their leading Indian batters.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, “A deal would not be possible with Kolkata. They (Gujarat Titans) can ask for Rinku from Kolkata, or otherwise, if they can give them Ramandeep. However, they already have whatever you are going to give in return, barring maybe an Indian fast bowler. If you feel that they can give you Ramandeep and you give them an Indian fast bowler in return because you have many, there is still a possibility.”
Gujarat’s Indian pace options could therefore become valuable trade assets if the franchise wanted to strengthen elsewhere. For KKR, meanwhile, the calibre of player coming the other way would become particularly important if Rinku were part of the conversation.
Chopra added, “I talk about Rinku repeatedly, but they won’t let Rinku go. They will ask for Siraj in return for Rinku. They won’t let Siraj go. Rinku and Siraj would be incredible, or else Rinku with Gurnoor plus one more. You will have to apply your mind that way. Can we actually create a deal? Rinku will be so invaluable if he comes to Gujarat. He hit five sixes here only.”
A direct Rinku-Siraj exchange would represent a major call for both franchises, given the importance of established Indian players to IPL squad construction. Chopra also raised Gurnoor Brar as another potential piece in the equation, although his own assessment underlined how difficult it would be to prise either Rinku or Siraj away.
Punjab Kings emerge as another potential trade partner
Gujarat Titans’ fast-bowling resources also open up possibilities beyond KKR. Punjab Kings could offer a different route if the franchises saw an opportunity to redistribute players who could potentially fill different needs across their respective squads.
Chopra noted, “I figured out an excellent trade with the Punjab Kings. Can they give Gurnoor Brar and take Nehal Wadhera, or else can they take Shashank Singh? Punjab is unable to use Nehal Wadhera properly. They definitely need an Indian fast bowler. Gurnoor Brar’s stock has suddenly risen.”
That proposal would place Gurnoor at the centre of a potential deal rather than as one component of a larger package. It would also give Gujarat a route to adding an Indian batter while allowing Punjab to strengthen their domestic pace resources.
Gurnoor Brar could hold wider trade value
Gurnoor’s inclusion in both scenarios makes him a particularly interesting element of Chopra’s proposed trade landscape. Rather than focusing exclusively on marquee names, the former India Batter sees scope for franchises to consider whether players outside their regular plans could deliver greater value elsewhere.
Chopra stated, “So Gurnoor Brar is a fantastic guy because he doesn’t play here. It is not a bad deal for both. Both teams can benefit. I don’t know whether it will happen or not, but Nehal isn’t getting used there, and Gurnoor isn’t getting used here. That could just be a magical swap because Nehal is a good cricketer and Gurnoor’s ceiling is really high.”
For now, the scenarios remain Chopra’s proposals, with no indication that KKR, Gujarat Titans or Punjab Kings are pursuing any of the suggested exchanges. The ideas nevertheless highlight different ways Gujarat Titans could leverage their Indian pace depth, with KKR and Punjab Kings presenting contrasting trade possibilities.
