BCCI considering Sri Lanka’s request for August white-ball series
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is evaluating a proposal from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to host a six-match white-ball series in August — a development that could mark the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to international action.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, SLC has requested India to tour for three ODIs and three T20Is during the August window, following the cancellation of India’s scheduled tour to Bangladesh (August 17–31). That tour has now been postponed to September 2026, citing international commitments and scheduling challenges, though sources have also pointed to security concerns amid rising regional tensions.
This unexpected gap in India’s calendar — between the conclusion of the England series on August 4 and the start of the West Indies Tests on October 2 — has opened up an opportunity. The Sri Lankan board’s decision to shift the 2025 Lanka Premier League has further cleared the path for a potential India visit.
Rohit and Kohli’s ODI comeback hinges on BCCI’s final call
Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have stepped away from T20Is and Tests, focusing exclusively on the ODI format. They have not featured in the current Test series in England and have had no ODI appearances since India’s triumph at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in March.
The proposed Sri Lanka tour would offer both veterans an ideal return to action, as well as valuable match practice ahead of upcoming ICC events. However, their inclusion hinges on the BCCI’s approval of the tour.
Asia Cup decision at the heart of scheduling dilemma
The fate of the proposed Sri Lanka series is tightly linked to the status of the Asia Cup, which is currently slated for September 17–27 in India. The tournament, hosted by the BCCI, remains in limbo, awaiting formal clearance from the Indian government due to geopolitical tensions surrounding Pakistan’s participation.
An unnamed official with knowledge of the developments confirmed to Cricbuzz on July 9:
“There is a request pending from the SLC, but we have not decided on it yet. We will have to see the situation with the Asia Cup. Everything is interlinked.”
While both the Sri Lanka series and the Asia Cup could theoretically take place, the BCCI is proceeding cautiously. Any decision will follow detailed consultations with stakeholders, particularly with head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia is in London for the Lord’s Test and is expected to discuss the matter with senior players and team management. The board’s final response to SLC is anticipated after these discussions.
Strategic window for BCCI to fill the August void
The proposed Sri Lanka series would serve multiple strategic purposes for Indian cricket. It would fill the scheduling vacuum created by the Bangladesh tour’s postponement, help maintain team momentum, and allow players like Rohit and Kohli to reacclimate to competitive cricket.
Should the series go ahead, it would take place before Sri Lanka’s scheduled tour of Zimbabwe, which begins August 29, offering a convenient window for both boards. It would also be a boost for fans, who have been eager to see the return of two of Indian cricket’s modern greats.
What’s next?
A decision on the Asia Cup is expected in the coming days. Until then, both the Sri Lanka series and the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remain contingent on several moving parts — from government clearance to player workload management.
But the stage is set, and if the pieces fall into place, Indian fans could see two legends don the blue again as early as next month.
