Sachin Tendulkar has praised a fan-engagement initiative in Japan that provided spectators with illustrated guides to help them understand cricket during the country’s one-off men’s T20I against India in Sano.
The reckoners were distributed to spectators at the entrance to the venue, explaining the fundamentals of cricket for an audience that included people still becoming familiar with the sport. The initiative caught Tendulkar’s attention as Japan hosted one of cricket’s biggest international teams.

Seeing India play Japan is wonderful in itself, but what made me smile was seeing reckoners being given to the audience at the entrance so they could understand the game better.

The match offered Japan an opportunity to stage an international contest against India while also introducing more local spectators to the game. Tendulkar added: “Seeing India play Japan is wonderful in itself, but what made me smile was seeing reckoners being given to the audience at the entrance so they could understand the game better.”
Japan has been developing its presence in international cricket, and the fixture in Sano gave the hosts a high-profile contest on home soil. For spectators unfamiliar with cricket’s rules, the guides provided a simple introduction while they watched the action unfold.
Tendulkar noted: “We’ve all had our first cricket match. It’s lovely to see more people getting theirs.”
Japan pushes India in shortened contest
Rain reduced the India-Japan T20I to five overs per side, turning the fixture into a tight contest. India were restricted to 32/4, with Shreyas Iyer scoring 16.
Japan remained in contention during the chase and entered the final over requiring eight runs for victory. The hosts managed five, leaving India with a two-run win.
Tendulkar also recognised the hosts’ performance, stating: “Credit to the Japan team for taking on the challenge and putting up a fight.”
The one-off T20I took place before Japan’s men begin their Asian Games campaign, giving the team competitive exposure against India while bringing local spectators closer to the sport on home soil.
