All eyes on CSK-RR mega trade ahead of IPL 2026
In what could be one of the most seismic player trades in IPL history, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are closing in on a three-player deal that could shake up their squads and leadership plans for IPL 2026. The blockbuster swap — involving Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran moving to RR in exchange for Sanju Samson — has reportedly progressed to the final approval stages.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, both franchises have initiated the formal Expression of Interest process, and all three players have agreed to the trade. “Consent has been obtained from all three players and the Expression of Interest process has been initiated. All three have signed on the dotted line, but the process will take some time to culminate,” a franchise official told Cricbuzz.
However, what initially looked like a done deal now faces unexpected turbulence. A key regulatory roadblock has emerged due to the inclusion of Sam Curran in the trade. With RR already at their overseas player limit, the franchise cannot accommodate Curran unless they release one of their eight overseas players before the November 15 retention deadline.
Overseas quota hurdle and purse limitations stall final confirmation
The involvement of an overseas player has triggered complications under IPL rules. Since Curran is an English player, the Rajasthan Royals not only need to clear space in their squad but also obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
As of now, RR have eight overseas players on their roster and just ₹30 lakh (approx. US$ 33.9k), remaining in their purse, significantly short of Curran’s ₹2.4 crore (approx. US$ 271k) valuation. While releasing high-value players like Wanindu Hasaranga – INR 5.25 crore (approx. US$ 592.6k) or Maheesh Theekshana – INR 4.40 crore (approx. US$ 496.6k) is an option, that can only happen once retention lists are officially announced.
A source familiar with the deal admitted to Cricbuzz that nothing is guaranteed but the deal looks likely: “I cannot guarantee it will not be stalled. But having come this far, the likelihood of one of them backing out is less.”
Emotional stakes high as Jadeja’s CSK exit nears
Jadeja’s potential departure after more than a decade with CSK has stirred emotional reactions from fans and former players alike. Former CSK vice-captain Suresh Raina was among the first to urge the franchise to reconsider:
“Ravindra Jadeja should be retained again. He is a gun player for CSK. He has done really, really well for the team over the years, so ‘Sir Ravindra Jadeja’ has to be there,” he told official broadcasters Jio Hotstar.
Ravichandran Ashwin echoed similar sentiments on his YouTube show Ash ki Baat, saying, “One thing in the fans’ minds will be Jadeja’s affinity for CSK. Jadeja is no small player for CSK. There is some emotion attached to Jadeja and CSK. And trading is not something they have done in the past. This could also be a good opportunity for Jadeja. RR is a team built on a lot of youngsters and a lot of connections. It is a big decision for CSK to leave Jadeja out.”
In terms of cricketing value, Ashwin made a strong case for the trade: “In the last three years, what has Jadeja done for the CSK? Of course, he is a World Cup winner. He helped the team win the IPL through his fantastic batting in the IPL 2023 final. We need to look at stats, CSK in Chennai have always had a finger spinner operate in the middle, and that has been Jadeja. In the last three years, Jadeja has taken 38 wickets in 44 games, with an economy rate of 7.9.”
He added that the conditions in Jaipur would work in Jadeja’s favour: “With his batting, he is still one of the best finishers going around. He is striking over 150 against fast bowlers and less against spin. He is doing a fine job as the finisher. Keeping this in mind, the trade is going to be amazing news for the Rajasthan Royals. Jadeja gives them finishing skills as a left-hander. Jaipur will suit him because there is no lateral movement there.”
Leadership puzzle: will Sanju Samson get the CSK captaincy?
With MS Dhoni potentially playing his final season, questions about CSK’s next captain remain open. But despite the Samson trade, many believe Ruturaj Gaikwad will continue leading for now.
Ashwin dismissed any speculation that Sanju Samson will be given the captaincy immediately: “I don’t think Sanju will get captaincy at CSK because it would be his first year and I am not sure they will give him captaincy right away. But he will definitely be an option to lead in the future if the trade happens.”
Ashwin also broke down the cricketing logic for both teams: “CSK also benefit by plugging that gap in the top order. Ayush and Sanju can open, Ruturaj can come at three, which is what he has been wanting to do. That gives them balance. But the loss would be that from where will they bring another spinner? Who is going to be that spinner who they will bank upon to bowl the middle overs? Who is that gun marquee fielder for them? Finishing is the issue.”
He later added, “If, along with Jadeja, Sam Curran also goes, he gives them the vital fast-bowling option, and along with this great batting form, it is going to be a phenomenal deal for Rajasthan. CSK will also benefit by bringing Samson in. They will also have a lot of money going into the auction, and they get the option of buying (Australian all-rounder) Cameron Green.”
Ashwin emphasized CSK’s rebuilding needs: “But where will they get the spinner from? Will Cameron Green be able to finish off games? Will CSK look after Ben Stokes too? Only time will tell. I don’t think Sanju will be given the captaincy because it would be his first season there. I think Ruturaj Gaikwad will continue, but he will definitely be an option going ahead.”
On the RR side, Ashwin also weighed in: “Jadeja is no small player for CSK. This is not something CSK have done in the past. You have to speak to the player. It is a good option for Jadeja; he can get to finish his IPL career where he began.”
He added, “It is always difficult to lead the side in your first year as you have to gel with the rest of the squad. I have played for the Rajasthan Royals, and I am familiar with their culture. It is a team built on youngsters and connections.”
Samson’s trade demand and failed DC move
The dominoes for this trade were set in motion when Sanju Samson, reportedly unhappy with RR’s internal decisions and his demotion in the batting order, sought a transfer. Ashwin confirmed that several teams were in contention for him.
“Everyone knows that Sanju Samson wants to leave Rajasthan. Other franchises will be interested for his skill and talent and also that it weakens the other side. From my view, Tristan Stubbs and Sameer Rizvi for Samson in Delhi was very close to completion but it did not happen. It made sense for Delhi and the wicket was good for batting there so it was best for Samson. If you score more in the IPL you are in the limelight. This trade would have made more sense for Sanju. It was a good deal for RR as well as they had troubles in finishing,” he said.
CSK’s subtle signal and what’s next
Adding further weight to the deal, CSK posted a birthday wish for Sanju Samson on their official social media, writing: “More power to you, Sanju! Wishing you a super birthday!” The post arrived hours after news broke of the impending swap, fueling speculation of an imminent announcement.

While everything now hinges on the overseas slot issue and BCCI’s final nod, the current silence from both franchises suggests they’re waiting for regulatory clearance.
