Kolkata Knight Riders have announced the appointment of Shane Watson as the Assistant Coach for the upcoming TATA Indian Premier League 2026. The former Australian all-rounder brings with him a wealth of international experience, leadership, and a deep understanding of modern-day franchise cricket.
Watson will work for head coach Abhishek Nayar and alongside Dwayne Bravo (mentor) with reports that New Zealander Tim Southee will be announced as bowling coach.
One of the most celebrated all-rounders of his era, Watson represented Australia in 59 Tests, 190 ODIs, and 58 T20 Internationals, amassing over 10,000 international runs and taking more than 280 wickets across formats. Watson was an integral part of Australia’s 2007 and 2015 ICC World Cup-winning squads and played a key role in numerous series victories around the world.
He also enjoyed a stellar IPL career spanning 12 years (2008-2020), with 145 matches and four centuries to his name – including, most famously, an undefeated 117 for CSK in the 2018 IPL final against Sunrisers Hyderabad to secure CSK’s third title.
Following his retirement from cricket, Watson transitioned seamlessly into coaching and mentorship roles within global T20 leagues.
He previously served in the IPL as an Assistant Coach for the Delhi Capitals from 2022-2023, under head coach Ricky Ponting at Delhi Capitals.
He was the head coach of San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket from inception in 2023 through its third season this past summer. Watson chose to step down from that role last month as the Unicorns wanted the head coach role to be year-round moving forward.
This arrangement did not work for Watson given his numerous commitments, which, in addition to coaching in various leagues, include his broadcast commentary as well as multiple successful entrepreneurial ventures.
Watson has become a pioneer in advancing the mental skills side of cricket, which he credits for his late-career playing surge and success across formats. He has published a best-selling book, The Winner’s Mindset, detailing the approach he used to achieve longevity and his biggest successes (including his 2018 IPL final knock).
Global stars, such as Rachin Ravindra, have credited the book with improving their game, with South African legend Faf du Plessis stating that he refers to the book before every game. Subsequently, Watson released The Winner’s Mindset online course, delivering these learnings in a popular multimedia format. This thought leadership has made Watson one of the most sought-after coaches on the franchise circuit.

With Watson joining the coaching staff, KKR aim to further strengthen their strategic core as they prepare for IPL 2026, building on their legacy as one of the most dynamic and successful franchises in the league.
