Sharjah tightens security measures ahead of Tri-Nation Series

With emotions expected to run high during the upcoming Tri-Nation T20I Series featuring Pakistan, Afghanistan, and hosts UAE, Sharjah Cricket Stadium is rolling out new crowd control measures to prevent any repeat of the violent clashes that have disrupted previous matchups between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

According to multiple reports, authorities at the stadium have decided to implement separate entry gates and designated seating enclosures for fans of both nations — a move aimed at minimizing friction between rival supporters during the high-stakes encounters.

This strategy will be in full effect for the two much-anticipated fixtures between Pakistan and Afghanistan on August 29 and September 2, both of which are expected to draw capacity crowds of over 16,000.

Past clashes drive new policy for stadium safety

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan fans have boiled over during previous matches, most notably during the Asia Cup 2022 in Sharjah, when celebrations following a dramatic Pakistan win led to violent altercations in the stands. Similar incidents were also reported during the 2019 World Cup match in Leeds, underlining a growing pattern of volatility when these two sides meet.

Sharjah Stadium officials are determined not to let history repeat itself.

“Afghan fans tend to become emotional during intense matches,” a stadium official said, as quoted by Samaa.tv.  “To ensure safety, we’re planning to seat fans in separate sections.”

In addition to physical segregation, ticket sales will be restricted based on nationality, ensuring that fans are seated in their designated zones throughout the tournament.

Seven-match T20I series to begin August 29

The Tri-Nation Series will follow a round-robin format, with each team playing the others twice before the top two advance to the final on September 7. All matches will take place at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Full schedule:

  • August 29 – Afghanistan vs Pakistan
  • August 30 – UAE vs Pakistan
  • September 1 – UAE vs Afghanistan
  • September 2 – Pakistan vs Afghanistan
  • September 4 – Pakistan vs UAE
  • September 5 – Afghanistan vs UAE
  • September 7 – Final

The tournament serves as a key build-up to the Asia Cup, which begins September 9 in the UAE. Pakistan, India, UAE, and Oman make up Group A, while Group B includes Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong.

A rivalry that continues to grow

On the field, Pakistan and Afghanistan have produced closely fought T20I contests in recent years. In seven head-to-head matches, Pakistan leads the tally with four wins, while Afghanistan has taken three victories — setting the stage for another intense chapter in their cricketing rivalry.

With new crowd management systems in place, Sharjah officials are hoping the Tri-Nation Series will be remembered for its cricketing quality — not for incidents in the stands.
