India captain Shubman Gill and England batter Sophia Dunkley have been named ICC Players of the Month for July 2025, following stellar performances in their respective series. The awards were decided through a combination of fan votes and an expert panel comprising former international players and media representatives.

Gill makes history with fourth men’s award

Gill became the first male player to win the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award four times, following a prolific run in the England Test series. He scored 567 runs at an average of 94.50 in three Tests played in July. His previous wins came in January 2023, September 2023, and February 2025.

The highlight of his month was a record-breaking performance in the second Test in Birmingham, where he scored 269 and 161, amassing 430 runs in the match — the second-highest aggregate ever in a Test. He also added a valuable 103 in the fourth Test in Manchester to help India draw the match and keep the series alive.

Gill won the award ahead of England captain Ben Stokes and South Africa all-rounder Wiaan Mulder. Reflecting on the achievement, he said:

“It feels great to be named the ICC Player of the Month for July. This time it holds more significance since it came for my performances during my first Test series as captain. The double ton in Birmingham will be one of the highlights of my career. I look forward to continuing my form and bringing more laurels for the country.”

Dunkley shines against India

In the women’s category, Sophia Dunkley claimed the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award after outscoring her teammates during England’s hard-fought home series against India.

Dunkley played in all seven matches across ODIs and T20Is, scoring 126 runs in three ODIs and 144 runs at a strike rate of 134.57 in four T20Is. She was England’s leading scorer in the T20I series and produced a standout 92-ball 83 in the first ODI in Southampton.

She edged out teammate Sophie Ecclestone and Ireland captain Gaby Lewis for the award. Dunkley said:

“I am delighted to win the ICC Player of the Month award off the back of a really hard-fought series against India. We’ll take a lot from this moving towards the ICC Women’s World Cup.”
