ST JOHN’S, Antigua — West Indies cricket legend Sir Clive Lloyd will be honoured at the CWI/WIPA Awards Gala on Sunday, June 22, 2025, as Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) commemorate 50 years since the team’s historic 1975 ICC Cricket World Cup victory.

The celebration will be held at the Wyndham Grand Barbados, with broadcast coverage starting at 5:30 PM. Lloyd will be joined by other living champions from that era in what promises to be a landmark evening in Caribbean cricket history.

Remembering West Indies’ first World Cup triumph

Lloyd, who captained the West Indies to back-to-back World Cup victories in 1975 and 1979, recalled the magnitude of lifting the trophy at Lord’s with an inexperienced squad and against the odds:

“It was a very significant moment for us because we were not doing so well in Test matches and we had a young team. That made it extra special.”

During the final against Australia, Lloyd delivered a captain’s knock of 102 off 85 balls, lifting West Indies from 50 for 3 to a commanding total of 291 for 8 — a target they defended to win by 17 runs. His innings included 12 fours and two sixes and laid the foundation for a commanding performance in the field, including five run outs.

Lloyd’s enduring legacy as captain and leader

Standing at six-foot-five, Lloyd was as imposing in leadership as he was at the crease. He is credited with uniting a culturally diverse squad from across 14 Caribbean territories into a cohesive, dominant team.

“Being captain of the West Indies is always difficult because we have 14 islands, different cultures… To get them together is the greatest triumph,” he said.

Lloyd’s leadership extended beyond the World Cup triumphs. Under his captaincy, the West Indies team went 27 Test matches unbeaten, including 11 straight wins and the memorable “Blackwash” series win over England in 1984. He later served the game as a manager, selector, and ICC Match Referee.

A night of history and celebration in Barbados

The 2025 CWI/WIPA Gala not only celebrates Lloyd’s leadership but also the ongoing legacy of that victory for Caribbean cricket. A limited number of fan tickets are available for purchase at windiescricket.com.

Lloyd, inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009, hopes the event inspires the region’s next generation of stars:

“If you put in the effort, you will do well. The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary.”

Fans across the world can tune in to watch this tribute to one of cricket’s greatest leaders as the Caribbean honours a defining moment in its sporting history.
