Speculation surrounds Rohit and Kohli’s Test exits as Uthappa questions timing

Robin Uthappa has raised doubts over the nature of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s Test retirements, while Tim Southee has backed the duo’s ongoing value in the ODI format.

Retirement timing sparks debate over exit decisions

The abrupt red-ball retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma stirred debate across the cricketing spectrum, with former India cricketer Robin Uthappa now questioning the nature and timing of their decisions. While both players stepped away from Test cricket earlier this year, their exits arrived closely together, leading many to speculate on whether the move was entirely voluntary.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Uthappa said, “I don’t know if it was a forced surrender, but it definitely didn’t seem like a natural exit. What the truth is, they themselves will have to share in their own time. But I don’t think it was natural.”

The statement has reignited conversations about the circumstances that led to both senior players retiring within days of each other. Rohit’s departure followed reports of the BCCI considering a change in Test captaincy ahead of the England tour, while Kohli’s decision came as a greater surprise, with earlier signs pointing toward continued commitment to red-ball cricket.

Uthappa defends Rohit’s form and praises white-ball hunger

Reflecting on Rohit’s recent struggles in Australia, Uthappa dismissed the idea that form alone justified a red-ball exit. He said, “When Rohit was not scoring runs in Australia, I felt that he should take a break for six months and work on his fitness. I had no doubt in my mind that he would score runs.”

Despite their Test exits, both Kohli and Rohit have continued to make strong statements in the ODI format. During the home ODI series against South Africa and the prior tour of Australia, the two veterans played pivotal roles and have since carried that momentum into the domestic Vijay Hazare Trophy, with both registering centuries.

Uthappa observed a renewed sense of purpose in the pair, especially as they look to cement their places heading toward the 2027 World Cup. “In both Virat and Rohit, you can see that hunger back in their eyes, which is really cool. It’s endearing to see it from a veteran who’s been there, done that, and achieved so much in international cricket,” he added.

Southee backs Kohli and Rohit to continue in ODIs

Veteran New Zealand pacer Tim Southee also weighed in on the debate, voicing support for both players to continue in the one-day format regardless of age. Speaking to media on the sidelines of the ILT20, Southee said, “Kohli is arguably the best ever one-day batsman and if he’s still performing then why not.”

He further pointed to Rohit’s recent form to make his case. “Rohit (too) had scored 100 some days ago in Australia, so they’re still performing. So, as long as they’re still performing and still contributing to the side then I believe age is only a number,” he added.

With both players now focused on ODI cricket, their performances will continue to be scrutinized, but the current indicators suggest they remain vital assets in India’s white-ball ambitions — even if the way their Test journeys ended remains a topic of intrigue.
