S Sreesanth, the former India fast bowler and 2011 World Cup winner, has been suspended for three years by the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) over public remarks he made involving Sanju Samson‘s exclusion from India’s Champions Trophy squad. The decision was finalized during a special General Body meeting held in Kochi on April 30.
The suspension follows Sreesanth’s appearance on a Malayalam television panel, where he strongly supported Samson and criticized the KCA, alleging undue influence in selection decisions. During the broadcast, Sreesanth vowed to “protect” Samson and other Kerala players, a statement that drew immediate backlash from the state’s cricketing body.
KCA: Suspension is for defamatory comments, not for backing Samson
Earlier, the KCA had issued a show-cause notice to Sreesanth, who famously played in India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup-winning squads. While many assumed the action was a response to his support of Samson, the KCA clarified otherwise in a formal statement.
“The disciplinary action was not for supporting Samson but for making misleading and defamatory comments against the association,” the KCA said, emphasizing that the remarks were damaging to the institution’s credibility.
Context: Sanju Samson’s omission and state-level tension
The controversy emerged amid growing unrest following Sanju Samson’s exclusion from the Indian squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy. Adding to the drama, Samson was also dropped from Kerala’s Vijay Hazare Trophy squad, a move that critics argue may have influenced national selectors and deepened internal rifts.
Samson, a key figure in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and a consistent performer, has remained silent throughout the controversy. However, the issue has amplified concerns over transparency and governance within Kerala cricket.
Franchises spared, but warned after show-cause notices
Sreesanth is a co-owner of the Kollam Aeries franchise in the Kerala Cricket League and was one of several individuals and entities served show-cause notices. Other teams, including Alappuzha Team Lead and Alappuzha Ripples, were also scrutinized.
“Since the franchise teams gave satisfactory responses to the notices, no further action will be taken against them. However, the meeting decided to advise greater caution when appointing members to team management,” the KCA said in its official release.
KCA seeks legal damages from Samson’s father
In a new development, the KCA has also resolved to pursue legal compensation from Sanju Samson’s father, Samson Vishwanath, along with two other individuals. The association alleges that defamatory statements were made using Samson’s name to damage KCA’s image and credibility.
This deepening conflict reflects broader frustrations within Kerala cricket circles, where decisions around player selection, administrative accountability, and governance transparency are increasingly under public scrutiny.
With Sreesanth now facing another long-term ban and the KCA embroiled in legal threats, the controversy shows no signs of fading—and it raises difficult questions about the future of high-profile cricketers and power dynamics in Indian domestic cricket.
