Islamabad bombing prompts urgent discussions over tour safety
A deadly suicide bombing in Islamabad on November 11 — the same day the first ODI between Pakistan and Sri Lanka was played in Rawalpindi — triggered immediate anxiety within the touring Sri Lankan camp, prompting fresh doubts over the continuation of the series. Although the opening match had concluded without incident, the proximity of the blast to the squad’s base heightened fears among several players and support staff.
By the following day, November 12, concerns had escalated to the point where some Sri Lankan players communicated a desire to return home due to security worries, forcing both boards into urgent overnight discussions to determine whether the tour could proceed.
According to PTI, PCB chairman and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited the Sri Lankan team soon after the incident to brief them on heightened security measures and provide direct reassurance. A source explained the urgency behind this intervention, saying, “That is why Mohsin Naqvi personally went to the stadium and met with the visiting team members and assured them they would be safe and secure.”
Pakistan immediately bolstered its safety protocols around the visitors. “Security has been beefed up with Pakistan Army and the paramilitary rangers now deputed to monitor security for the visiting players and officials,” a source told PTI.
Sri Lankan players express concern as board issues firm directive
Despite the enhanced arrangements, several Sri Lankan players and support staff expressed their desire to return home, prompting intense internal discussions. With only one ODI completed in the series, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) made clear that leaving the tour would carry consequences. Its formal communication stated, “If any player, players, or member of the support staff return despite SLC’s directives, a formal review will be conducted to assess their actions, and an appropriate decision will be made upon the conclusion of the review.”
SLC said it moved quickly to address the concerns raised by its squad, emphasising close coordination with Pakistan’s authorities and cricket board. “Following this development, SLC immediately engaged with the players and assured them that all such concerns are being duly addressed in close coordination with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the relevant authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of every member of the touring party.”
The conversations, involving team management, SLC leadership, and PCB representatives, continued late into the night before clarity emerged regarding the tour’s continuation.
Agreement reached to continue the series; PCB confirms revised dates
With Sri Lanka opting to complete the tour, Naqvi publicly thanked the visitors for their decision while announcing updates to the schedule. In his statement posted on X, he said, “Grateful to the Sri Lankan team for their decision to continue the Pakistan tour 🇵🇰🇱🇰. The spirit of sportsmanship and solidarity shines bright. The ODI matches between Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be played on 14th and 16th November in Rawalpindi.”

The PCB followed with an official release confirming the adjustments and acknowledging the support of fans amid the disruption. “The PCB appreciates the understanding and cooperation of cricket fans and looks forward to their continued support as we host the Sri Lanka team in what promises to be an exciting ODI series.”
A subsequent statement detailed how the changes were mutually agreed upon by all boards involved, including Zimbabwe Cricket ahead of the upcoming tri-nation series. “The decision to revise the schedule was made in consultation with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC), following mutual discussions to accommodate operational and match requirements.”
Tri-series shifted entirely to Rawalpindi as Pakistan strengthens security
In addition to the ODI rescheduling, the tri-nation T20I series featuring Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe will now be played entirely in Rawalpindi, beginning on November 18. The venue change reflects both operational adjustments and the need for a centralised security plan during a tense period in the country.
For Pakistan, ensuring the smooth progression of the tour holds both symbolic and practical significance, especially given the long shadow of the 2009 terror attack on Sri Lanka’s team in Lahore. With enhanced security in place and all parties aligned on next steps, the series is set to continue under a revised but stabilised schedule.
