The Telangana Cricket Association (TCA) has renewed its call for recognition from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), with members alleging that district cricketers continue to face limited opportunities within Telangana’s cricket structure, according to a report by The Hans India. The association argues that while cricket participation continues to grow across the state, pathways to higher levels of the game remain concentrated in Hyderabad, leaving many players from district regions without equal access to opportunities.
Representatives of the organisation said they represent 32 districts, 80 revenue divisions, more than 22,000 registered cricketers and over 300 league teams. They contend that cricket has developed significantly across Telangana’s towns and villages, but that administrative control and key decisions continue to be centred around the state capital.
Calls for greater representation in professional pathways
A central concern raised by TCA members relates to the representation of district players in elite competitions and development programmes. The association alleged that players from outside Hyderabad have not received adequate opportunities in Ranji Trophy squads, age-group teams and other professional cricket pathways despite years of investment in the sport.
Former cricketers and coaches also sought greater transparency around the use of BCCI funding, particularly regarding expenditure on infrastructure, academies and grassroots development projects. TCA representatives further questioned how many district cricketers had progressed to represent Hyderabad in major domestic competitions over the past two decades. They also questioned whether sufficient resources had been directed towards nurturing cricket outside Hyderabad.
During their appeal for BCCI recognition on Tuesday, Telangana Cricket Association cricketers and coaches said, “The floodlights may shine brightly over stadiums, but the future of district cricketers still remains in darkness.”
Concerns raised over cricket administration
TCA representatives also criticised the broader administration of cricket within the state, alleging that district infrastructure has remained underdeveloped despite multiple reviews and interventions over the years. They argued that longstanding issues affecting cricket outside Hyderabad have persisted without meaningful change.
Several speakers, including Gopal Sharma, Ram Challa, Jhansi, Jaypal, Mahender Reddy and Veeresh Goud, questioned whether existing structures were adequately serving the interests of cricketers across Telangana. They maintained that district players continue to face barriers in accessing opportunities available within the state’s cricket ecosystem.
Objections voiced over proposed TG20 League
The association also raised concerns about the proposed TG20 League, alleging that the competition lacked required approvals and that its selection process did not sufficiently accommodate players from district regions. TCA representatives claimed the proposed structure favoured Hyderabad-based participation and did not provide balanced opportunities across the state.
TCA leaders further argued that several Indian states operate with more than one cricket association and questioned why Telangana should be denied a broader statewide structure. They urged the BCCI to grant the association full recognition, maintaining that their demand is centred on equal opportunity and representation for district cricketers rather than financial assistance.
