TNT Sports nears England cricket Australia tour rights deal as Channel 5 eyes free-to-air coverage

Cricket Australia is closing in on a UK broadcast agreement for England's eight-match white-ball tour, with Channel 5 negotiating a highlights package and potentially one live T20 International.

With England’s white-ball tour of Australia less than a month away, UK television rights for the eight-match series remain unresolved, highlighting the increasingly uncertain market for overseas cricket broadcasting.

TNT Sports is now close to securing the live UK rights, according to an exclusive report by The Guardian‘s Matt Hughes, while Channel 5 is separately negotiating a deal that could bring part of the tour to free-to-air television.

Cricket Australia is understood to be optimistic that an agreement with TNT Sports will be finalised, although discussions are continuing over the precise arrangements.

Channel 5 is also in advanced negotiations with Cricket Australia over a highlights package covering the tour’s three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and five T20 Internationals. The broadcaster is exploring the possibility of showing one of the T20 matches live.

If both agreements are completed, the tour could provide UK audiences with a combination of subscription-based live coverage and free-to-air access.

Channel 5 targets a potentially historic free-to-air broadcast

The opening T20 International in Melbourne on November 21 has emerged as Channel 5’s preferred option for live coverage.

Scheduled to begin at 8:15am UK time on a Saturday, the match offers an attractive viewing window for British audiences compared with many fixtures played in Australia.

A successful agreement would mark a notable development for Channel 5, which has not previously televised an England international played overseas.

It would also represent the first free-to-air broadcast of an England match abroad since Channel 4 secured the UK rights to England’s Test series in India in 2021, during the final COVID-19 lockdown.

Channel 5 has already expanded its presence in cricket broadcasting through a four-year agreement that began in 2026, giving it live coverage of two men’s and two women’s home T20 Internationals each summer.

Adding an overseas England fixture would extend that involvement beyond the domestic international calendar.

Paramount ownership creates opportunities for TNT Sports and Channel 5

The potential involvement of both broadcasters is particularly significant because TNT Sports and Channel 5 are owned by Paramount Skydance.

Their shared ownership creates scope for cooperation across live sports rights, with TNT Sports providing subscription coverage while Channel 5 offers selected free-to-air programming.

The two broadcasters have already been involved in complementary arrangements for major sporting events.

During the Commonwealth Games last summer, TNT Sports held exclusive live UK rights, while Channel 5 acquired a highlights package.

A similar arrangement for England’s Australia tour could provide another example of how the group distributes sports programming across its pay-TV and terrestrial outlets.

However, the precise structure of any cricket agreement remains under discussion, and no final arrangement has been announced.

Cricket Australia’s wider UK rights strategy

The latest negotiations follow Cricket Australia’s earlier efforts to secure a longer-term broadcasting partner in the UK.

As previously reported by cricexec, Cricket Australia was exploring a proposed four-year UK rights agreement in May 2026, with Amazon and DAZN among the broadcasters involved in discussions.

That package included men’s and women’s Ashes tours, England’s white-ball matches in Australia and the 150th anniversary Test scheduled for the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March 2027.

The discussions reflected Cricket Australia’s interest in establishing greater certainty around its UK media revenues rather than continuing to negotiate individual tours on short-term arrangements.

It remains unclear how the proposed multi-year package relates to the current negotiations involving TNT Sports and Channel 5.

Neither Amazon nor DAZN was reported to have completed an acquisition of the four-year rights package.

TNT Sports leads competition for England’s Australia tour

TNT Sports has an established relationship with Australian cricket, having broadcast England’s previous three Ashes series in Australia.

Its pursuit of the upcoming white-ball tour follows reported interest from both Sky Sports and DAZN.

The negotiations also come at a time when overseas bilateral cricket rights have become increasingly difficult to sell well in advance.

Falling valuations have contributed to a market in which broadcasters often wait until shortly before a tour begins before committing to coverage.

Sky Sports, traditionally a major buyer of international cricket rights in the UK, has increasingly moved away from long-term agreements with overseas cricket boards.

Nevertheless, Sky retains a presence in the market. It is broadcasting England’s current ODI tri-series in Pakistan and has secured the rights to the Test series in South Africa scheduled for the Christmas period.

For Cricket Australia, the prospect of concluding a deal with TNT Sports would resolve an important broadcasting question ahead of England’s arrival.

England prepares for three ODIs and five T20 Internationals

England’s limited-overs squad, led by Head Coach Brendon McCullum, is scheduled to travel to Australia in early November following its participation in the ODI tri-series in Pakistan.

England has faced difficulties in that competition, suffering successive defeats against Pakistan and Sri Lanka that have left its hopes of reaching the final under pressure.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has also adjusted the team’s preparations for the Australia tour following criticism of the arrangements preceding the previous Ashes series.

A 50-over warm-up match is scheduled at the WACA Ground on November 7, providing England with competitive preparation before the ODI series begins at Perth Stadium on November 13.

The three-match ODI series will be followed by five T20 Internationals, beginning on November 21.

The eight-match itinerary gives prospective UK broadcasters a combination of weekday and weekend programming across two white-ball formats.

Broadcast deal remains unconfirmed

TNT Sports declined to comment on the discussions.

The outcome could determine whether an England international played overseas returns to free-to-air UK television for the first time since 2021.
