Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has expanded his sports investment portfolio by acquiring a 49% stake in The Hundred franchise Trent Rockets. The deal, valued at just under £40 million, will be executed through Cain International, a real estate investment firm co-founded by Boehly and British businessman Jonathan Goldstein.
This investment values the entire Rockets franchise at £79 million, with Nottinghamshire retaining majority control through its 51% ownership. The Rockets will continue to be based at Trent Bridge ground.
Cain International had previously shown interest in London Spirit before a Silicon Valley group secured a 49% stake in the team for £145 million. The Rockets deal contributes to a growing wave of investments in The Hundred, bringing the total investment in seven teams to over £500 million. The combined value of these franchises is now approximately £820 million.
Meanwhile, Southern Brave is expected to be the last franchise sold, with its acquisition anticipated this week. The co-owners of Indian Premier League team Delhi Capitals are set to purchase the team following their acquisition of Hampshire.
Boehly’s influence in sports extends well beyond this latest investment. In May 2022, his consortium completed a £4.25 billion takeover of Chelsea Football Club, where he serves as chairman while Goldstein holds a board position. Additionally, through his company Eldridge Industries, Boehly owns a minority stake in Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers and has investments in various other sports ventures.
