Head prioritises red-ball cricket before Ashes

Travis Head has been released from Australia’s T20 International squad for the final two matches against India to instead play for South Australia in the Sheffield Shield, according to a report by cricket.com.au. The decision comes as selectors allow senior players to balance workloads and fine-tune preparations for the upcoming Ashes series, which begins on November 21 in Perth.

Head featured in the first three T20Is of the five-match series before being given the choice to either continue in the white-ball setup or return to domestic red-ball cricket. He opted for the latter, joining several senior teammates who are also returning to first-class action this week.

Senior players return to domestic duty

Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood are set to play for New South Wales in their Sheffield Shield clash beginning Monday, while Cameron Green is expected to resume bowling duties for Western Australia against Queensland at the WACA Ground. The group’s red-ball focus underscores Australia’s emphasis on Test preparation, particularly with the Ashes less than three weeks away.

Head will line up alongside Alex Carey for South Australia against Tasmania from November 10. It marks his first first-class match since the West Indies tour in July and provides an opportunity to regain form after a quiet white-ball spell. Over his last eight innings across T20Is and ODIs, Head’s highest score was 31, a lean patch following his 142 against South Africa in August.

Focus on form and readiness for Perth Test

The 31-year-old left-hander is one of three players from Australia’s T20I squad to prioritise red-ball cricket ahead of the Ashes, alongside Josh Hazlewood and Sean Abbott. Both bowlers featured in the first three games against India before being released to play for New South Wales in their upcoming Shield fixture at the SCG.

The report says every likely member of Australia’s first Ashes Test squad is expected to participate in the next round of Sheffield Shield matches. Head took a similar approach last season, playing an early Shield round before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, where he finished as the competition’s leading run-scorer.

Building momentum toward the Ashes

The final two T20Is between India and Australia will be played at Carrara on November 6 and in Brisbane on November 8. While the short-format series concludes, Head’s focus now shifts to longer-format readiness, with his red-ball workload seen as crucial to maintaining balance and rhythm ahead of the five-Test series against England.

By stepping away from the remaining T20Is, Head strengthens Australia’s red-ball core — an approach that reflects the selectors’ broader strategy to have key players primed for one of the most demanding contests in world cricket.
