ICC levels multiple corruption charges against Aaron Jones

United States cricketer Aaron Jones has been provisionally suspended from all forms of cricket following serious anti-corruption charges laid by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The suspension, which comes less than two weeks before the start of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, marks a major development in a broader investigation into corruption within the sport.

In an official media release, the ICC confirmed the charges, stating:

“The International Cricket Council (ICC) has charged United States of America (USA) player Aaron Jones with five breaches of the anti-corruption codes of Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the ICC.”

According to the ICC, the violations largely stem from Jones’s involvement in the 2023–24 BIM10 tournament in the Caribbean, with additional charges linked to international matches.

“The charges relate predominantly to the Bim10 tournament in 2023-24, which falls under the jurisdiction of the CWI Anti-Corruption Code, with two other charges relating to International Matches (falling under the jurisdiction of the ICC Code),” the ICC stated.

Details of the charges under ICC and CWI anti-corruption codes

Jones has been charged with five separate breaches of anti-corruption codes under both CWI and ICC jurisdictions. These include:

  • Breach of Article 2.1.1 of the CWI Code – Fixing, contriving to fix or otherwise influencing improperly, or being a party to an agreement or effort to fix or contrive in any way or otherwise influence improperly, the result, progress, conduct or other aspect of matches in the Bim10 tournament in 2023/24 (or attempting to do so).
  • Breach of Article 2.4.2 of the CWI Code – Failing to disclose to Cricket West Indies details of any approaches or invitations to engage in conduct that would amount to a breach of the CWI Code.
  • Breach of Article 2.4.4 of the CWI Code – Failing or refusing to cooperate with a reasonable investigation carried out by the Designated Anti-Corruption Official (or his/her designee) in relation to possible offences under the CWI Code.
  • Breach of Article 2.4.4 of the ICC Code – Failing to disclose to the ICC ACU full details of any approaches or invitations received to engage in Corrupt Conduct under the ICC Code.
  • Breach of Article 2.4.7 of the ICC Code – Obstructing the ACU’s investigation into possible Corrupt Conduct by concealing and/or tampering with information that may have been relevant to the investigation, or which may have constituted evidence or led to the discovery of evidence of Corrupt Conduct.

Ongoing investigation may lead to further charges

The charges against Jones are part of a wider anti-corruption investigation being conducted by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit.

“These charges are part of a wider investigation which is likely to result in further charges being issued against other participants in due course,” the ICC noted, hinting that additional individuals may be implicated as proceedings advance.

Jones has been sidelined with immediate effect and given a 14-day window from January 28, 2026, to formally respond to the allegations.

“Mr. Jones has been provisionally suspended from all cricket with immediate effect and has 14 days from 28 January 2026 to respond to the charges,” the ICC confirmed.

Suspension casts uncertainty over USA’s World Cup plans

The timing of the suspension places the USA cricket team in a challenging position ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which is set to run from February 7 to March 8 in India and Sri Lanka. With the squad yet to be announced, Jones’ provisional suspension could significantly impact team selection, potentially forcing selectors to revise their plans before finalizing the lineup.

Jones, 31, has been a central figure in USA cricket’s recent rise. He has featured in 52 One Day Internationals and 48 T20 Internationals, amassing 2,434 runs across both formats, including one century and 13 half-centuries. He was part of the USA side that reached the Super Eight stage in their debut T20 World Cup campaign in 2024, underscoring his importance to the national setup. His unbeaten 94 off 40 balls in the opening match against Canada was one of the highest scores of the tournament, and he famously scored 11 runs in the Superover when the USA defeated Pakistan in the group stages.

ICC makes no further comment pending upcoming developments

With the investigation still ongoing, the ICC has refrained from offering any additional commentary on the matter. As disciplinary proceedings continue, Aaron Jones’ future in international cricket remains uncertain — and USA’s World Cup campaign may now begin under a cloud of controversy.
