Virat Kohli used his return to Delhi to engage with students during the inauguration of a cricket academy at DPS RK Puram, delivering a message centred on clarity, discipline and long-term commitment. The former India Captain, who was in the city following an IPL fixture, drew from his own journey to highlight how early decisions and mindset shape a player’s career trajectory.

He said, “Thank you for having me. I’m not used to speaking in schools, so this is going to be a bit awkward for me because I moved away from the school setup long ago for cricket, and that’s what I’m going to talk about. I understand the environment of a school. I’ve been through the same process and stage that all you kids are a part of right now. And I can just share from my own experience how my focus and priority changed very early on in my life.”

The interaction came shortly after Kohli added another landmark to his record, becoming the first player to cross 9,000 runs in the Indian Premier League. Across international cricket, he has accumulated more than 28,000 runs, including 54 centuries in One Day Internationals — the most by any player — alongside 30 Test hundreds and a total of 85 international centuries, placing him second only to Sachin Tendulkar.

He said, “Be honest with your dreams, about what you want to do and follow that dream with absolute commitment. Only you will know whether you are being 100% honest or not.”

Early choices shaping long-term careers

Kohli’s progression from junior cricket into the international arena was built on early commitment, with his development years defined by a clear focus on pursuing the sport at a professional level.

He added, “I chose sport very early on in my life, but that came from a very honest place. I was very sure that I wanted to go ahead and pursue cricket, and I had to be honest with myself, my family, and also my teachers to convey to them that this is the path I want to take.”

Importance of school environment

Beyond performance and ambition, Kohli emphasised the role of educational environments in shaping individuals, underlining how foundational experiences contribute to long-term growth.

He noted, “What I want to say is, a school is a place where you come to learn, you come to grow, you become better people.”

The discussion also extended to the influence of teachers and mentors, highlighting the importance of respect within the learning process.

He further said, “Have respect and regard for that environment first. For your teachers, for the people who are teaching you. They are giving you a part of their lives. It’s very important to give them that respect and the focus and attention that’s required.”

Personal moments and on-field context

The visit also featured a widely shared moment during the ceremony when a student attempted to touch Kohli’s feet, prompting an immediate and modest reaction as he stopped the gesture and acknowledged it with folded hands. The event also marked a reunion with his childhood coach, Rajkumar Sharma, adding a personal layer to the occasion given their long-standing association in his early development.

Kohli’s appearance in Delhi followed a dominant outing in the IPL, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured a comprehensive win after bowling Delhi Capitals out for 75 and completing the chase inside seven overs, reinforcing their strong position in the standings.

Connection to early training roots

The academy visit reflected Kohli’s continued connection to training environments that shaped his formative years, reinforcing the role of structured development in building long-term careers.

He added, “I started practising when I was eight years old, and I still continue to come to the academy whenever I get time. And it’s a big part of my childhood, and I hope all the kids that come to learn cricket here can value it, can learn something from the academy. And I hope it does wonders for the school, the cricket setup here as well. So, I wish everyone all the very best.”

The interaction formed part of Kohli’s broader engagement during his time in Delhi, combining on-field commitments with initiatives aimed at inspiring the next generation of cricketers.
