PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad — As part of its strategic plan to modernize cricket operations, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has launched a hands-on training initiative for emerging performance analysts during the West Indies Breakout League, currently underway at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
Avenesh Seetaram, Performance Analyst for the West Indies Men’s Senior Team, is leading a series of workshops, seminars, and in-game training sessions with the six data analysts assigned to the competing Breakout League franchises.
Building regional analyst expertise in real-time
The program aims to upskill the analysts through intensive tutorials focused on real-time data application, game preparation, and collaboration with coaches and players. The initiative reflects CWI’s broader push to integrate data analytics into cricket strategy and to establish a pipeline of skilled analysts across the Caribbean.
“These workshops are designed to upskill analysts and get them to align with best practices in analytics,” said Miles Bascombe, CWI’s Director of Cricket. “By embracing a data-driven approach, we’re allowing players and coaches to integrate real-time data into their strategies while the matches are in progress.”
Seetaram: “Critical to prepare analysts for the international stage”
Seetaram emphasized the importance of creating continuity between domestic and international cricket: “Data has become a critical part of the game internationally. The chance to enlighten and expose our next batch of analysts is important—it allows players to become familiar with analytical input before reaching the highest level.”
He added that real-time support is central to the initiative: “I will be sitting with all of them for multiple games, helping each analyst utilize in-game analysis of data for use by their team. Additionally, I’ll be participating in preparation meetings to ensure information delivery is consistent and of a high standard.”
