Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has paid tribute to the Zimbabwe senior men’s side following their historic qualification for the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
In a congratulatory message sent to the team on behalf of the Board, Management and Staff, ZC Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani described the achievement as a “defining milestone for Zimbabwean cricket”, applauding the players for reaching the second phase of the global showpiece for the first time.
“On behalf of Zimbabwe Cricket, the wider Zimbabwean cricket family and the nation at large, I extend our heartfelt congratulations on your historic qualification for the Super Eight stage,” he said.
Zimbabwe confirmed their place in the final eight after their penultimate Group B encounter against Ireland was abandoned due to rain at Pallekele on Tuesday.
The no-result yielded the single point they required to secure progression with a game to spare.
The breakthrough was underpinned by earlier victories over Oman and, most notably, Australia – a triumph Mr Mukuhlani highlighted as symbolic of the team’s development.
“Your victories over Oman and, most memorably, Australia showcased courage, discipline and unity at the highest level,” he said.
“The world has witnessed the true character and potential of this team.”
The win over Australia proved pivotal in shaping the group standings.
Australia’s subsequent defeat to Sri Lanka left them stranded on two points, while Ireland’s hopes were extinguished when rain denied them a must-win opportunity.
Zimbabwe, by contrast, progressed on the back of composure and consistency throughout their campaign.
Mr Mukuhlani said the team’s exploits had transcended the boundary ropes, rekindling belief across the country.
“Beyond the field, you have reignited national pride and inspired a new generation to believe in what is possible,” he noted, pledging the Board’s continued backing.
“My Board’s support remains unwavering – in this tournament and beyond.”
Zimbabwe will conclude their group fixtures against co-hosts Sri Lanka in Colombo on Thursday before shifting focus to a demanding Super Eight programme in India.
They are scheduled to open the next phase against the West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 23 February, followed by a clash with hosts India at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on 26 February.
Their Super Eight campaign concludes against South Africa at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on 1 March.
Only the top two teams in the group will advance to the semi-finals.
For Zimbabwe, however, the immediate priority is to build on a landmark qualification that signals renewed competitiveness in the shortest format.
“You have made history,” Mr Mukuhlani told the squad. “Now build on it.”
