Matthew Gilkes scores 200 from 203 balls for UNSW

In the same week he extended his contract with the Thunder Nation until the end of BBL|12, Matthew Gilkes scored his first double century in NSW Premier Cricket on Saturday.

Against the red ball, the 21-year-old wicketkeeper-batter dispatched 10 sixes and 15 fours helping UNSW to 4/368 declared with Western Suburbs asked to bat late on day one of the two-day fixture. Final day is next Saturday.

His previous highest score in Premier Cricket was 166 not out last season.

On re-signing with the Thunder last week, BBL Head Coach Shane Bond described Gilkes as “one of the most exciting up-and-coming batters in Australia.”

Exciting young gun Ollie Davies continued his impressive form for Manly-Warringah.

Davies, 19, followed his blistering 130 from 86 balls the previous Saturday with 91 off 86 against a St George attack including NSW Blues seamer Trent Copeland and Sydney Sixers captain Moises Henriques.

Thunder batsman Jason Sangha, 21, was also impressive scoring 95 for Randwick Petersham as captain.

With the ball, Thunder’s teenage leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha claimed 3-43 for Campbelltown-Camden and, leading the attack for Bankstown, allrounder Nathan McAndrew took 3-50.

Sydney Thunder is set to open its tenth KFC BBL campaign on 5 December 2020 against the Melbourne Stars at the MCG, before playing its first game at Sydney Showground Stadium on 8 December 2020.
