Following the excitement and entertainment of the CG Insurance T20I Series and the 2-1 winning result, West Indies will turn their attention to the CG Insurance One-Day International Series. The opening contest against Sri Lanka will be at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Wednesday. First ball is 9:30am (8:30am Jamaica Time) and two teams are expected to be greeted with a good batting surface.

West Indies held their final training session at the same venue on Tuesday under the guidance of Head Coach Phil Simmons, and afterwards, Assistant Coach Roddy Estwick said the mood in the camp was upbeat. He outlined that a series win over the coming week would be critical, with West Indies needing to get must-needed points in the ongoing ICC ODI Super League which would go towards direct qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup in India in 2023.

“What I would really like to see is to win the series 3-0 but we’re also making sure that players understand their roles, players go out and execute their roles and [make sure] we don’t have to qualify [for the World Cup] like we did last time via the playoffs,” Estwick said.

We don’t want to go to a tournament where we have to win to qualify, so we’re going to try and make sure that we win all of our remaining series. It’s very, very important we start by winning against Sri Lanka. Last time we played Sri Lanka a year ago away from home, we lost three-nil, even though it was a close fought series but we want to turn that around and we want to make sure we do qualify.”
