THE MCC WORLD CRICKET COMMITTEE (WCC) HAS TODAY EXPRESSED ITS DELIGHT AT THE CONFIRMATION THAT CRICKET WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE 2028 OLYMPIC GAMES IN LOS ANGELES.

The WCC has been a long-term advocate of the sport being included in the Games and following the recent announcement by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), its Chair, Kumar Sangakkara, said:

“It is fantastic news that cricket will be played at the 2028 Olympic Games. It is a significant step for the sport in raising its profile around the world.

“Multi-sport events such as the Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games attract and inspire a different audience, so this is an incredible opportunity for the sport.

“We have been supportive of this development for a long time and members of the committee, both past and present, will be thrilled to see men’s and women’s cricket being played in the Los Angeles Games.

“We must congratulate the International Cricket Council (ICC) on the work they have put in to ensuring this advancement.”

As well as supporting the inclusion of cricket in the Olympic Games, the WCC also backed the re-introduction of the sport into the Commonwealth Games when they met in Bengaluru in 2019.

The sport formed a part of the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, with a women’s T20 tournament taking place at Edgbaston.
