Western Province were crowned champions of the Division 1 Cricket South Africa (CSA) 1 Day Cup after a massive 107-run victory over North West Dragons on Saturday.

After being put to the bat first, centuries from Kyle Verreynne and Mihlali Mpongwanga propelled Western Province to a massive 308 run target with a record-breaking 199-run stand for the fifth wicket between the pair.

Western Province had slumped to 81/4 before the duo anchored the innings to a defendable target.

Mpongwana blasted his way to a maiden List A century in his 105 off 109 which included eight boundaries and three maximums. Meanwhile, Verreynne’s 111 off 103 (eight 4s and two 6s) was his second ton in the competition this season, both scored against the Dragons.

Kerwin Mungroo (3/66) and Migael Pretorius (2/51) were the best bowlers for the visitors and their opening destruction saw off Jonathan Bird with just three runs and Tony de Zorzi with 11.

The Dragons’ batting order struggled in their response, with skipper, Wihan Lubbe, providing the only resistance with a half century of 70 off 79.

Mpongwana provided an all-round player of the match performance as he followed up his ton with three scalps, returning 3/32 with the dismissals of Senuran Muthusamy (25), Lesiba Ngoepe (16), and Ruan de Swardt with six runs.

Abdullah Bayoumy (3/24) was the most successful bowler for the hosts, registering the wickets of Lubbe,  Pretorius (22), Duan Jansen (18), and the run -out of Meeka-eel Prince to restrict the Dragons to 200 all out.
