Australian TV personality and Sunrise co-host Matt Shirvington has picked his side in the Big Bash League, formally putting his support behind Sydney’s favourite team, the Sydney Sixers.

Officially announced today as the club’s #1 ticket holder, the much-loved TV host – known to fans as ‘Shirvo’ – will lead the charge as the Sixers march into the upcoming KFC BBL|13 season.

Shirvo was presented with his own Sixers jersey by Steve Smith on Thursday night ahead of the Sixers’ opening KFC BBL|13 fixture tonight (Friday October 8). Naturally, he will proudly wear number 7.

A familiar face to Sydneysiders, Shirvington represented Australia on the track at the 2000 Olympic Games before launching into a successful media career, taking over the co-host chair on Australia’s #1 breakfast show, Sunrise, in June.

The former Olympian also claimed five consecutive national titles in the 100m sprint before breaking the Australian 100m record at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.

Fittingly, Shirvo will now team up with the Big Bash’s most successful club as they look to add a fourth BBL trophy to the silverware cabinet this summer.

Sixers captain Moises Henriques welcomed Shirvo into the Sixers family.

“We’re pumped to have Shirvo on board with us this summer,” Henriques said.

“The boys are looking forward to getting him out to a training session and putting him through his paces in the nets.

“It was really special for the club to break our all-time membership record last month and we’re hoping that Sydney will join Shirvo and get on board with the magenta this summer.”

Shirvington said he had been a fan of the Sixers for some time.

“To be the Sixers’ #1 ticket holder is such a privilege, both as a fan and especially given the success of the team over the years,” Shirvington said.

“I’m looking forward to being more involved with the club, the players, and particularly the fans who give so much to the game.

“I’m honoured to wear the magenta this summer, and hopefully I can bring a little bit of luck. Smash ‘em Sixers!”
