CSA: #PitchUpInPink – Pink day to continue raising awareness in the fight against breast cancer

The hugely popular Pink Day One Day International (ODI) is set to take place at DP World Wanderers Stadium on Sunday 17th December as South Africa face India in the first Betway ODI.

In keeping with the Betway Pink Day ODI tradition, the Proteas will once again wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness, education, detection and research.

“We are delighted to once again raise awareness on breast cancer with cricket fans,” said Cricket South Africa CEO Pholetsi Moseki. “To help in the fight against breast cancer, awareness alone is not enough. We encourage people to be proactive and get screened. Breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer among women in South Africa, but it can affect men as well. Early detection can lead to effective treatment and a positive outcome,” he said.

A percentage of the ticket sales goes towards the Betway Pink ODI Fund, but Cricket South Africa urges all South Africans to contribute to this important cause by wearing pink and supporting the initiative by purchasing a ticket and attending the match. Once the costs of hosting the Betway Pink Day ODI have been taken into account, proceeds to the Fund to support breast cancer related initiatives.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink wherever they are watching the match to show their support for breast cancer awareness, and solidarity with the Proteas. Pink replica Proteas shirts can be purchased from several retailers such as Cricket Company, Sedgars, Lotto Sport Online, Sportsmans Warehouse, Takealot, Sneakers and Cricketstuff.

In the past 10 years and 11 Pink ODIs, South Africa has won 9 times. The Betway Pink ODI never fails to deliver exhilarating cricket, starting in the first match in 2013 when Hashim Amla (112 off 113 balls) and AB de Villiers (128 off 108 balls) put on 238 for what is now the 5th highest third wicket partnership in ODI history to beat Pakistan by 34 runs. Two years later, AB smashed 149 from 44 balls for what is still the fastest ODI century as the Proteas beat the West Indies by 148 runs.

After losing to Pakistan in 2019 and England in 2020, their only two losses in pink, the Proteas have won three Betway Pink ODIs in a row, against Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Netherlands.

Betway SA Head of Marketing, Mark Rowles said the brand remains committed to joining hands with Cricket South Africa in the fight against Breast Cancer and using the sport of Cricket to raise the necessary awareness and education.

“As proud sponsors of the Betway Pink ODI, we have worked closely with CSA in assisting with the raising  of funds, awareness and education about this cause. As we mark an exciting fifth Betway Pink ODI as sponsors, we are aiming to raise more funds for the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital as we have in previous years.

“This year, we are hoping for a high scoring spectacle as we have committed to donating R2000 for every 6 and R1000 for every boundary. We therefore encourage fans to come out in their numbers on Sunday and enjoy the entertainment on offer from both teams”, said Rowles.
